Laneway Festival Drops Adelaide and Perth for 2027, Retrenches to Four Cities

Laneway Festival will skip Adelaide and Perth in its 2027 edition, narrowing the travelling event to four cities: Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland. Organisers confirmed the decision on Monday, 10 August, framing the pause in those two markets as strategic rather than permanent Billboard.
The Queensland leg is also moving back to familiar ground. After a one-off 2026 edition on the Gold Coast at Southport Sharks, Laneway returns to the Brisbane Showgrounds — the venue it has called home since 2013, when it relocated from its original Fortitude Valley site. Brisbane has been on the circuit since 2007.
Laneway's footprint has never been fixed. The festival began in 2005 as a single Melbourne event, added Sydney in 2006, Brisbane in 2007, Adelaide in 2008 and Perth in 2009. Auckland joined in 2010. A Singapore edition ran for seven years from 2011, and a one-off Detroit event in 2013 remains the festival's only North American appearance.
The 2026 edition, which concluded earlier this year, marked Laneway's 21st birthday and was headlined by Chappell Roan. Rolling Stone Australia reported in February that the festival had confirmed its 2027 return shortly after that edition wrapped Rolling Stone Australia.
What the Adelaide and Perth cuts mean in practice is a tighter routing. Dropping two cities reduces freight, crew accommodation and venue hire across the tour — costs that have been under pressure across the live-music sector as festivals from the UK to Australia have folded or scaled back in recent years. Organisers have not said whether the pause is tied to specific venue, ticketing or cost issues, only that it is strategic.
For fans in South Australia and Western Australia, the language is careful: a pause, not an exit. Whether Adelaide and Perth return for 2028 will depend on how the four-city 2027 run performs — in ticket sales, logistics and the broader festival economy that Laneway, like every promoter, is reading in real time.
