White Tiger Born at Cuba's National Zoo as Staff Contend With Fuel Shortages

Cuba's National Zoo in Havana recorded the birth of four Bengal tiger cubs, one of them a white tiger — a genetic variant produced by a recessive mutation in orange Bengals — marking only the second time the color morph has appeared at the facility, according to The Guardian and Reuters, both reporting on July 6, 2026.
Ángel Cordero, a zookeeper who has worked at the facility for 44 years, confirmed that white tigers had been born there only once before. That prior event was in March 2021, when four Bengal cubs — also including a white tiger — were born and officially announced by the zoo on April 5 of that year. A fifth Bengal cub followed in July 2022. The 2026 litter is therefore the third notable Bengal birth event at the zoo within five years, and Reuters characterized the white cub's arrival as a "reproductive milestone" for the institution.
The zoo spans 375 hectares (926 acres) — a considerable footprint — and that scale is precisely where the energy crisis bites hardest. Staff need 20 liters of diesel daily to operate the vehicles that distribute food across the grounds. Their current allotment is five liters. Zoo director Juan Carlos Santos, quoted by Reuters, said the animal population has remained stable despite the shortfall, but the arithmetic is unambiguous: workers are managing distribution at one quarter of the fuel level the task nominally requires.
Cuba's energy crisis is structural, not incidental. The island's grid has been in progressive deterioration for years, with rotating blackouts now a fixture of daily life and institutional fuel rations tightened across sectors. For a zoo of this scale, the logistics of animal care are not separable from fuel access — feed preparation, refrigeration, and transport across nearly 400 hectares all depend on it. Santos's assurance that population figures are holding is the relevant operational metric, but it leaves open questions about diet quality, veterinary response times, and staff capacity that fuel rationing inevitably compress.
The white tiger's rarity requires a brief technical note. White tigers are not a distinct subspecies; they carry a double recessive allele that suppresses phaeomelanin, producing a white coat with dark brown stripes. In wild Bengal populations, the trait is essentially absent — the last confirmed sighting of a white tiger in the wild was in 1958 in India. Those in captivity today are descendants of a single wild-caught individual, Mohan, captured in Madhya Pradesh in 1951 and subsequently bred with related animals. The genetic bottleneck this created has made white tigers almost exclusively a captive phenomenon and, among conservation geneticists, a contested one: the trait is maintained through inbreeding, which carries heritable health risks. Zoos' relationships with white tigers have grown complicated as a result, with several international institutions phasing them out of breeding programs.
Cuba's situation sits outside that institutional debate in one important respect: the island's zoological program operates under significant resource constraints that limit participation in international studbook arrangements and coordinated breeding programs managed through bodies like the Species Survival Plan. Whether the Havana zoo's Bengal population is managed in coordination with regional or global conservation networks is not detailed in current reporting.
What the birth does clarify is the resilience — or at minimum the continuity — of the zoo's big cat program under conditions that would stress facilities with far greater resources. Cordero's four decades of institutional knowledge and Santos's public accounting of the fuel deficit both point to a staff that is managing carefully and transparently within severe constraints. The cubs are alive. The question the next months will answer is whether Cuba's broader energy situation stabilizes enough to give the zoo's workers the diesel margin they need to sustain that record.
