Xiaomi's new Redmi Note 17 Pro Max comes with a 9,210mAh battery, the largest the company has put in any phone sold in Europe. The phone goes on sale across Europe, Australia, Latin America, and other global markets at the local equivalent of $499. It will not be sold in the United States. The Verge

In some countries outside Europe, the same phone comes with an even larger 10,000mAh battery. The European version splits the battery into two cells, and that split is what makes 100-watt fast charging possible. The phone charges fully in just over an hour, or gives you roughly a day of power in 20 minutes. Xiaomi says it can last up to three days of normal use, or 37 hours of continuous video playback.

Think of mAh, or milliamp-hours, as the size of a phone's fuel tank. Most mid-range phones today carry around 5,000mAh. This one nearly doubles that.

The battery uses a material called silicon-carbon composite. Regular phone batteries use graphite, but adding silicon lets manufacturers pack more energy into the same space because silicon can hold more charge per unit of volume. Xiaomi also says the battery should keep 80 percent of its original capacity after 1,600 full charges, which it estimates at about six years of use.

The rest of the phone's features are mid-range. It runs a Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 processor with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. The 6.83-inch OLED screen is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The phone has an IP69K rating, meaning it can survive high-pressure, high-temperature water jets. The camera setup includes a 50-megapixel main camera with optical image stabilization (which helps keep photos sharp by reducing hand shake), an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 32-megapixel front camera. The main camera sensor is on the smaller side, which fits the phone's price. The Verge Earlier reporting had confirmed the image stabilization on the main camera before launch. Notebookcheck

The Pro Max is the top model in a four-phone lineup called the Redmi Note 17 series. The cheapest model, the 4G-only Redmi Note 17 at $249, still has a 7,700mAh battery, a 6.99-inch OLED screen, and basic water protection. The price difference between the cheapest and most expensive models is $250, and the battery difference is about 1,500mAh on the European version.

The broader context here is that phone batteries have been getting bigger as the silicon-carbon technology behind them becomes easier to manufacture. Not long ago, 5,000mAh was about as large as you would find in a mid-range phone. Xiaomi is now shipping nearly double that at $499, which puts pressure on competitors who have kept their battery sizes smaller.

There is a trade-off to consider. The Pro Max has a large battery, a big screen, and rugged water resistance, all at a mid-range price. Xiaomi has not shared the phone's weight or thickness. Phones like this have been getting heavier, and a large dual-cell battery plus fast-charging hardware does not help with that. Buyers who care more about how a phone feels in hand than how long it lasts between charges may see the big battery as a mixed blessing.

The longevity claim is also worth a closer look. Six years of usable battery life down to 80 percent capacity is a serious number, and if it holds up in real life, it lines up with the European Union's push for electronics that last longer and are easier to repair. The 1,600-charge-cycle target is higher than what most phone makers currently promise. But independent testing will only come once the phone has been in people's hands for a sustained period.

For buyers who do not need the fastest processor or the best camera, the Pro Max is basically a battery-first phone. The processor will handle everyday tasks and casual gaming but is not in the same league as the chips in premium phones. The camera is solid on paper but not aiming to compete with the best. What Xiaomi is selling is staying power: a phone built to go for days between charges and to keep its battery health across years, not just months.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max and its three companion models are available now in the listed markets.
