More than 200 people have died in an Ebola outbreak that started in May 2026 in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. As of mid-June, there are over 800 confirmed cases, and the disease has spread across the border into Uganda. The World Health Organization has declared this a global public health emergency — the highest alarm level it can issue.

The outbreak began at a hospital in a city called Bunia, where healthcare workers started getting severely sick. In less than six weeks, the number of confirmed cases jumped from just eight to over 800. That speed is the main problem.

Doctors and Nurses Are Getting Sick

The most troubling part of this outbreak is that the people trying to treat patients — doctors, nurses, and lab workers — are getting infected themselves. By mid-June, over 70 healthcare workers had caught Ebola, and at least four had died. When healthcare workers get sick, fewer people can treat patients, and the disease spreads even faster.

Why are so many healthcare workers getting infected? Mainly because they don't have enough safety gear. Boots and masks are in short supply. Ebola spreads when infected blood or body fluids touch your skin, so healthcare workers without proper protection are basically sitting inside the danger zone every time they care for a patient. It's like trying to fight a fire without fireproof equipment.

A small number of healthcare workers have recovered — five by late May — but that's not nearly enough. When people survive Ebola, it gives hope to their communities and their blood can help treat other patients. Right now, the numbers don't offer much hope at all.

Why This Region Can't Stop It

Eastern Congo is already dealing with years of armed conflict. That conflict has destroyed hospitals, displaced families, and left healthcare systems with almost no supplies. Even before this outbreak, the region was struggling.

Another problem: there's no vaccine for this particular type of Ebola. The virus strain is called Bundibugyo, and doctors have a vaccine that works against a different Ebola strain (one that caused a major outbreak in 2018–2020). But it doesn't work well for Bundibugyo. That means health workers can't vaccinate people to prevent infection the way they did in previous outbreaks.

The disease has also crossed into Uganda, which means health authorities in two countries have to coordinate their response. That's harder and slower than it sounds, especially in regions already torn apart by violence.

The real question now is whether medical supplies — especially protective gear and medicines — can arrive fast enough to protect healthcare workers and stop the spread. Right now, they're not arriving fast enough.
