Your Hard Drive Won't Die Just Because Its Warranty Does

A hard drive made about sixteen years ago has been written to 25 times more than the manufacturer said it ever would be — and it still works fine, according to a report published on 20 June 2026. This challenges a common belief: that when a drive hits its rated limit, it is about to fail.
That belief is backwards. The limit — called TBW, or Total Bytes Written — is not a cliff edge where everything suddenly breaks. It is a warranty boundary. The manufacturer is saying: "We promise this drive will handle this much data. Beyond that, we are not responsible." That promise is conservative on purpose. The company wants to protect itself, not predict the exact moment your drive stops working.
Inside the drive is flash memory. Every time data is written and erased, the tiny transistors get a little older. Manufacturers set low limits to be safe. In reality, the drive often keeps working well past that limit. How much past depends on when the drive was made. The drive in this case is old — from the early 2010s. Older drives stored data in simpler ways and could handle more writes before wearing out. Newer drives pack more data into smaller spaces, which means they wear out faster if you write to them constantly. So 25 times over the limit is surprising but not impossible.
For anyone deciding whether to keep or throw away an old drive, here is what matters: Check the drive's health. Modern drives report their condition through something called S.M.A.R.T. data — think of it like a health checkup. Look at how many sectors have failed, how many read errors show up, and how worn the memory actually is. A drive that has gone past its official limit but still has clean health data is probably fine. One that is hitting that limit with rising errors is genuinely getting old.
