The UK government announced it will spend an extra £15 billion on defence, with a large chunk going toward drones and autonomous systems. The money will buy new navy ships equipped with drones — meaning crewed ships will work alongside unmanned ones, not just carry them as extras. BBC News reported that buying these vessels is a core part of the wider plan released that same day.

Three days before the announcement, the Financial Times had reported that the money would cover not just ship drones, but the entire range of unmanned and AI-powered systems. NATO countries have been pushing each other to develop these kinds of systems since Russia's invasion of Ukraine showed how expensive it is to keep replacing traditional weapons.

Why NATO Pushed for This

This announcement arrived in the middle of active pressure from NATO headquarters in Brussels. Eleven days before, the BBC reported that NATO members were concerned about how much the UK was spending on defence — unusual criticism, since the UK has long been one of the few NATO members that meets the alliance's 2% spending target.

The debate inside NATO has shifted. It is no longer about whether countries spend enough; it is about whether 2% is even the right target anymore. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has been telling members they should aim for 3.5% instead, when you add both military spending and defence-related infrastructure investment.

Rutte's presence at the announcement was deliberate. NATO has been preparing for its June 2026 summit. By having him appear alongside UK leaders as they announced the spending plan, both sides sent a message: the alliance is staying strong, and one of its biggest members is investing in better weapons rather than just spending more money overall.

What Drones Change About Naval Power

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, militaries have learned several hard lessons about drones. Unmanned ships and flying drones mean fewer sailors are at risk in dangerous waters. They can watch and gather information over long periods. Most importantly, they can be built and replaced cheaply compared to traditional warships.

Ukraine's drone attacks on Russian Black Sea Fleet ships showed something surprising: small, cheap unmanned systems can damage expensive conventional ships in ways a country might not expect.

For the Royal Navy, this matters concretely. The service does not have enough ships to cover the North Atlantic, the Indo-Pacific region, and the Red Sea corridor all at the same time. Unmanned ships cannot fully replace frigates, but they can extend the Navy's reach without needing as many crews or as much maintenance.

Beyond ships, the UK is also investing in ground drones, flying drones, and other unmanned systems. This effort is part of a larger European push to build their own drone supply chains instead of relying on other countries. That became urgent after Europe ran short on drones from Turkey and the United States during the Ukraine war, showing the risks of depending on single countries to supply weapons.

What Happens Next

The £15 billion figure is a promise, not yet a signed order for ships and systems. Defence budgets often announce large figures that later get split into smaller pieces, delayed, or shifted toward different projects as time goes on. The Defence Secretary will face questions about whether this money actually gets turned into real contracts with British companies.

The fact that Rutte was there for the announcement matters politically. If the UK does not actually build the drones and ships it promised on 29 June, other NATO countries will notice. They were in the room when the pledge was made.

The ship contracts will draw the most attention in the near term. Building drone-equipped warships is not just about the hull. The sensors, communications systems, and training for crews and machines to work together all take years to develop and test.
