Wildfire Smoke from Canada Is Drifting Across the U.S. — Here's What's Going On

On July 16, 2026, smoke from wildfires burning across south-central Canada and Minnesota spread across the United States. It triggered air quality alerts in more than 20 states and affected millions of Americans (The Guardian, July 16, 2026). The smoke traveled southeast from Ontario, through Quebec, and into the U.S. Midwest and Northeast. Before reaching the eastern U.S. overnight, it pushed Toronto's air quality to among the worst in the world on July 15 (NASA Earth Observatory, July 16, 2026).
As of mid-July, almost 850 fires were actively burning across Canada, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. More than 180 of those were in northern Ontario alone. Eight fires in northwestern Ontario grew significantly on July 13 and 14, becoming a major source of the smoke. Several communities in the area were told to evacuate. Since the start of 2026, Canadian wildfires had burned 1.9 million hectares (4.7 million acres) as of July 14. That's a large area, though still below the totals from the extreme fire years of 2023 and 2025. Canada's 2026 fire season started slowly, but activity picked up toward the end of June as conditions turned dry and warm, bringing burn totals closer to the 25-year average (NASA Earth Observatory, July 16, 2026).
By Thursday morning, July 16, air quality alerts had been issued for parts of North Carolina, Minnesota, Vermont, Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Delaware, West Virginia, Colorado, Virginia, and Maryland (The Guardian, July 16, 2026). Michigan's Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy issued a statewide alert for July 15 and 16, warning of "Very Unhealthy" air quality from fine particles called PM2.5 (Michigan EGLE, July 15, 2026). These particles are so tiny — about 30 times smaller than the width of a human hair — that they can travel deep into your lungs and even enter your bloodstream. The NWS Detroit office confirmed an air quality alert covering all of Southeast Michigan for the same period.
The National Weather Service issued alerts down to the county level. In Gogebic County, Michigan, an alert cited elevated PM2.5 from Canadian smoke for July 15 and 16. In McKean County, Pennsylvania, the alert warned that smoke from Ontario and Minnesota would enter the state from north to south and linger through about July 17. The Pennsylvania alert stated that "everyone may" be affected. Most air quality alerts are aimed at sensitive groups, like people with asthma, the elderly, or young children. Broadening the warning to everyone signals the air was unhealthy for the general public. The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management declared Air Quality Action days for both PM2.5 and ozone on July 15 and 16.
Not every location experienced the smoke the same way. NWS Raleigh indicated that the smoke should stay high in the atmosphere, rather than settling to ground level where people breathe, through at least the following day. The Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management reported hazy skies on July 16 but said no surface-level smoke was expected. NWS Mount Holly noted that smoke had arrived locally and expected some of it to mix down to the surface. The Green Bay and Gaylord NWS offices both published advisory pages confirming periodic air quality impacts across the Great Lakes region, mainly for sensitive groups. AirNow.gov, the EPA's official air quality monitoring website, displayed a site-wide banner warning that "Wildfire smoke is impacting air quality in multiple states" and directed users to its Fire and Smoke map.
Multiple wildfires were also burning in Minnesota, including in the Boundary Waters forest area (The Guardian, July 16, 2026). Canada's weather agency forecasted "very high" poor air quality through the night of July 15. In southern Ontario, residents were also dealing with a heat wave at the same time, which made the health risks from breathing in PM2.5 particles even worse (NASA Earth Observatory, July 16, 2026). The broader context here is that this event is similar to what happened in 2023 and 2025, when Canadian wildfire smoke also worsened air quality across large parts of the eastern U.S. What makes this episode different is that a cluster of fires in Ontario grew large enough to send smoke across the entire continent relatively early in the season, while a regional heat wave added to the strain on people's respiratory systems. Whether the total area burned this year reaches the extremes of 2023 and 2025 will depend on how much rain falls in August and September. With nearly 850 active fires and more growth happening in northwestern Ontario, the season appears to still be intensifying.
