NEON announced on July 21, 2026, that Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol's comedy series Nirvanna the Band the Show and its movie Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie will start streaming on Hulu in the United States on July 24. Canadian viewers will get access through Disney+ on August 7. The announcement, first reported by The Futon Critic, confirmed that both seasons of the TV series and the film will all be available on the U.S. launch date.

This is the first time the series has been streamable anywhere in several years. Before this, the movie could only be rented or bought through online stores, and the show itself had basically vanished from streaming platforms. The franchise started as a web series in 2008 and built a devoted fan base over the years, so the long gap in availability is something fans have noticed. The journey from a homemade web show to a movie released in theaters and now to a major streaming platform is a path more content is taking as streaming services look for older shows and films to help fill out their libraries.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is a sci-fi comedy that NEON released in theaters on February 13. After its theatrical run, the film was only available to rent or buy digitally. NEON has also released the movie as a 4K Blu-ray/DVD combo pack through its online shop for $25, which includes high-resolution picture and surround sound. An official score soundtrack is sold separately through the same store.

Both the series and the film star Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol, who have been working together for nearly two decades. Johnson's career has grown a lot since then. He wrote, directed, and starred in the 2023 film BlackBerry, which told the story behind the rise and fall of the BlackBerry phone and earned him wide attention. He is now developing a biopic about the late chef and TV host Anthony Bourdain, with actors Dominic Sessa and Antonio Banderas attached.

It is worth pausing on the timing of this release. Making a creator's older, harder-to-find work available just as their name recognition is climbing is a common move for distributors, but it has a real effect on the work itself. Nirvanna the Band the Show found its audience in a time when web series had very few ways to reach people, and the years it spent off streaming meant fans had no legal way to rewatch it. Putting it on Hulu means new viewers can now find it simply by browsing, without needing to already know it exists.

NEON's choice to release both TV seasons and the film at the same time means Hulu subscribers can watch the entire franchise in one place. The Canadian release on Disney+ follows two weeks later, on August 7. No other international streaming dates have been announced.

The bigger picture is that streaming services have increasingly been picking up older shows and movies that had no streaming home, especially when the people who made them are gaining fame. Johnson's move from web-series creator to theatrical filmmaker with a major biopic on the way makes the Nirvanna catalog more valuable to a distributor than it was during the years it sat unavailable. The Hulu release does not change anything about the show itself, but it does change who can watch it and how easily they can find it.
