A black-crowned night heron has been caught on camera at the Holnicote Estate in Somerset for three days in a row, a sighting that places a scarce UK visitor inside one of England's most closely watched wetland restoration sites. The bird was spotted near a camera set up to livestream an area where beavers have been introduced on the National Trust property, according to Ben Eardley, restore nature project manager for Somerset coast and countryside (The Guardian).

The black-crowned night heron grows to about 66cm (26in), roughly half the size of the grey heron most people in Britain would recognise. It has grey feathers, yellow legs, and a black cap with long white plumes trailing behind. The species is mostly active at night and is found across Africa, Asia, the Americas, and mainland Europe. Despite that wide global range, the British Trust for Ornithology classifies it as a scarce visitor to the UK. The first time it was confirmed to have bred in Britain was in Somerset in 2017.

Eardley confirmed the bird appeared on estate cameras on three consecutive days. The sighting was also covered by the Western Daily Press on July 24, 2026. The heron was seen close to the beaver-livestream camera, meaning it was in a wetland area that has been specifically designed to help species like this recover.

The broader context here is a large river restoration project that has been running at Holnicote for several years. Conservation experts have been letting the River Aller return to its natural, winding path. For hundreds of years, landowners and farmers had kept the river in a narrow, straight channel, which drained the surrounding wetland areas. The idea came from projects in Oregon, in the north-western United States, where similar techniques have been used to fix damaged waterways.

The scale of loss the project is trying to address is huge. Over the past 500 years, England has lost around 90% of its wetlands. That figure helps explain why re-flooding even small parts of the floodplain at Holnicote matters.

The estate is already home to an impressive range of wildlife. White-tailed eagles, white storks, and cranes have been recorded there, along with water voles, otters, pine martens, and grass snakes. Eardley noted that the water contains trout, sticklebacks, eels, and European bullhead. He also said that parts of the estate stay wet and green even when much of southern England is dry, making Holnicote a safe haven for wildlife during droughts.

The night heron's presence at this site makes sense if you think about what floodplain restoration does. The species likes shallow, slow-moving or still water with lots of plants growing along the edge for feeding and hiding. A river that is allowed to spread across its floodplain, especially one where beavers have been building dams and pools, creates exactly those conditions: varied habitats, more fish and frogs, and plenty of cover along the water's edge.

The reason this sighting matters to conservationists is not that the night heron is rare worldwide. It is not. What matters is that the bird is scarce in the UK, and that it stayed for three days instead of just passing through. Staying that long suggests the habitat was giving the bird what it needed: food and shelter. That is a stronger sign the wetland is working than a one-off sighting.

The sighting also raises an interesting question: could night herons be moving toward breeding regularly in Britain? The 2017 breeding record in Somerset set a precedent. The bird's appearance at a restored wetland in the same county prompts the question of whether a lack of suitable habitat has been holding the species back. The beaver-created wetland at Holnicote, with its shallow pools and plentiful fish, offers the kind of conditions where the species might try to settle.

None of this means the bird is planning to breed. A three-day visit by one individual is a single data point, not a pattern. But it is exactly the kind of data point that ecological monitoring aims to capture. The fact that it was recorded by a camera meant for watching beavers, not for surveying night herons, is a reminder that some of the best discoveries in nature recording happen by chance.

For people tracking how river restoration works in the UK, Holnicote is becoming one of the most useful places to watch. The combination of beaver activity, a river reconnected to its floodplain, and water that lasts through dry spells is creating conditions that attract species at the edge of their British range. The night heron is simply the latest to show up.
