A Big Earthquake Hit Japan — Here's What Happened and Why It Matters

A powerful earthquake struck southern Japan on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, killing at least five people and leaving nine missing. The quake hit at 4:27 PM local time and was centered on Kumamoto prefecture, on the southern island of Kyushu. Hundreds of people were injured.
Earthquakes are measured in two main ways. Magnitude tells you how much energy the quake released at its source. Intensity tells you how strong the shaking felt at a particular place. This quake was magnitude 6.8, and it reached the highest intensity level on Japan's scale, called shindo 7. At shindo 7, most furniture moves and wall tiles can shatter.
The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake's starting point (called the epicenter) about 5 km east of the city of Uto, at a depth of 10 km underground. That is considered shallow. Shallow quakes cause more intense shaking at the surface because the energy has less distance to travel. The USGS first reported the quake as magnitude 7.1 but later revised it to 6.8. Japan's own weather agency, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), lists it as magnitude 7.1. Both agencies agree the depth was about 10 km.
The JMA issued a tsunami warning right after the quake and lifted it within two hours. A tsunami is a series of large waves caused by underwater shaking. More than 60 smaller quakes, called aftershocks, followed the main event. The agency warned that the hardest-hit areas could face more strong quakes and landslides for about a week.
People were hurt at several locations. At a paper mill run by Nippon Paper Industries in the city of Yatsushiro, a chimney collapsed during the shaking. Two workers were taken to the hospital in cardiac arrest, and nine workers remain missing. CBS News reported that at least 11 people were trapped inside the plant. Xinhua, citing local police, said several employees were unaccounted for after the chimney fell.
At an Aeon shopping mall with about 200 stores in Kumamoto prefecture, an explosion happened shortly after the earthquake. Two women in their 20s were confirmed dead at the scene, and another person suffered cardiac arrest. An Aeon spokesperson said customers and employees had been evacuated after the initial quake and that the cause of the explosion was still unclear. A government official told reporters that the mall reported a gas leak, though the cause had not yet been determined.
The damage to basic services was widespread. Nearly 50,000 households lost electricity, and 140,000 households lost running water. Five houses were confirmed collapsed, with at least one death at those sites and more expected. More than 350 people were treated at local hospitals, many of which were themselves struggling with power outages, water cuts, and damaged medical equipment.
Japan's military sent 3,600 personnel to help with rescue and relief. The defence minister said 20 aircraft were sent to assess damage from the air. Hundreds of emergency workers from nearby areas arrived on Tuesday evening. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said authorities were still assessing how bad the damage was.
Relatively few buildings collapsed overall. The Guardian attributed this to Japan's strict building rules, which require buildings to be designed and reinforced to withstand earthquakes. This is a notable contrast: the shaking reached the highest level on Japan's intensity scale, yet modern buildings are specifically engineered to survive those forces.
The compounding risks are significant. Temperatures in the region were expected to top 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) on Wednesday, with high humidity making heatstroke a real danger for people displaced from their homes, rescue workers, and anyone sheltering without power or water. A shallow, intense earthquake combined with a summer heatwave creates overlapping problems. Search and rescue at the Yatsushiro paper mill, where nine workers remain missing, is complicated by unstable structures and the risk of more aftershocks. The JMA's one-week warning means the ground cannot be considered stable yet.
The broader context here is the challenge of responding to multiple disaster sites at once, across both industrial and commercial areas. The Aeon mall explosion, whether caused by the earthquake directly or by a secondary problem like a gas leak, shows how an earthquake can trigger a chain of further dangers in crowded public spaces. The paper mill collapse raises questions about how well older industrial structures hold up. With 3,600 military personnel and hundreds of first responders deployed, Japan's disaster response system is running at full capacity. The coming days will test whether it can keep up search and rescue operations in the heat and aftershocks while restoring water and power to nearly 200,000 affected households.
