Raq Dies at Jukebox's Hand in Raising Kanan Series Finale

Raq is dead. In the series finale of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, the matriarch who built a drug empire in Southside Jamaica, Queens, is killed not by a rival or a cop but by her own niece — Laverne "Jukebox" Thomas.

The episode, titled "Unconditional Love," closes a story that began as a prequel to the Power universe, tracing the origins of Kanan Stark, the character based on executive producer 50 Cent's own life as a former drug dealer who was shot nine times and survived (The Hollywood Reporter).

Jukebox, played by Hailey Kilgore, shoots Raq in retaliation for Kanan killing her father, Marvin — the character portrayed by London Brown (USA Today; Variety). It is, according to USA Today, the last person Raq expected to kill her.

The path to that moment runs through two seasons of escalating family violence. The season four finale had ended with Kanan holding a gun on his own mother, the screen cutting to black as a shot rang off — a cliffhanger that left Raq's survival in question for an entire year (The Hollywood Reporter). When season five opened, the answer came in the opening seconds: Kanan killed his uncle Lou-Lou, one of Raq's two brothers (The Hollywood Reporter).

Before her death, Raq apologises to Kanan and tells him she knows he killed both of her brothers (Deadline). The confession lands inside a scene that creator and showrunner Sascha Penn based on a real conversation he had with 50 Cent about 50 Cent's own mother — a detail Penn shared with The Hollywood Reporter (The Hollywood Reporter).

STARZ's own season-five messaging had signalled a hard turn. The network's official page promised that "nothing will stand in the way of Kanan's pursuit of power" and framed the ending as a beginning: "This isn't the end for Kanan Stark. It's just the beginning" (STARZ). Whether that line points to Kanan's life continuing within the existing Power timeline or something new remains unconfirmed.

What makes the finale land is its circularity. Raq shaped Kanan, and the damage she did came back through the family she raised. Jukebox pulling the trigger closes a loop that started with Marvin's death and ran through Lou-Lou's. The show ends where it had to — not with a kingpin's last stand, but with a niece settling a debt.
