Kanan pulled the trigger on his Uncle Marvin in the penultimate episode of Power Book III: Raising Kanan's fifth and final season, and the actor behind the character says he is ready for what comes next.

Episode 7 of Season 5, which aired on Starz, sees Marvin — played by London Brown — shot and killed by his nephew Kanan (Mekai Curtis). In the scene, Marvin smokes a cigarette and challenges Kanan to shoot, described as "fearless while staring death in the face." It is the second major family death this season at Kanan's hands: earlier in Season 5, Kanan killed his uncle Lou, played by Malcolm Mays. (Deadline)

The series, set in New York's criminal underworld, follows Kanan, his mother and drug queenpin Raq (Patina Miller), and her brothers Lou and Marvin. Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, who played the older Kanan in the original Power series, serves as a franchise executive producer. Sascha Penn is the showrunner — the lead writer and decision-maker for the series.

Season 5 premiered on Friday, 12 June 2026, on Starz. It is the final season of the prequel series. The official Starz synopsis for the season states that "Kanan makes a move that changes the Thomas family forever," with the tagline: "nothing will stand in the way of Kanan's pursuit of power." Brown spoke to Deadline in a post-mortem interview published on 31 July 2026 about his character's death and his time on the show. He said he wished the character had lasted longer: "I wish we could have gotten at least one more season out of Marvin, but something else is on the way." He also described the demands of the role and how it shaped him as a performer: "There are places that Marvin had to go, and I wasn't sure if I could tap into some of that stuff. Marvin's story this season carried weight beyond his own fate. Before his death, he was secretly leaving money with a preacher at a church to provide for his daughter Jukebox in case he was murdered. The character's arc also included a long-running storyline involving a painful fallout with Jukebox over her sexuality.

Penn, the showrunner, gave Deadline a post-premiere interview in June 2026 discussing Lou's death and what he called the show's "full circle return to Manhattan" in its final season. (Deadline)
