A Hollywood film release has pumped fresh life into a nearly three-year-old video game. Since Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived in cinemas on 31 July 2026, the 2023 title Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has sold an estimated 316,000 copies worldwide across PlayStation 5 and PC, generating roughly US$11 million (£8.14 million) in additional revenue for Sony. The figures come from Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott, who estimates that the game sold around 15,000 copies per day during the film's opening window at a discounted price of US$30 on PS5. For comparison, a February promotion at the same price moved about 6,300 copies per day. PC sales on Steam saw a similar lift despite a higher US$40 price tag. About 20 percent of the copies sold during the film window were physical discs. Eurogamer

The surge pushed Marvel's Spider-Man 2 past one million daily active users for the first time since its launch week in October 2023. Some players also reached the game through PlayStation Plus, Sony's subscription service, where the full title is available on the mid-tier Extra plan rather than as a separate purchase.

Sony and Insomniac Games, the studio behind the title, also added a new in-game costume matching the suit worn in Brand New Day, giving returning players something fresh to chase. The game, originally released on PS5 on 20 October 2023 and later ported to PC, now sits at an estimated 18.2 million lifetime copies sold — 92 percent of them on PS5 — with over US$1.2 billion (£888.6 million) in total sales revenue. The film itself was no quiet arrival. Spider-Man: Brand New Day set an all-time promotional record with US$309 million in media value, backed by marketing partners including BMW, Liquid I.V. and Little Caesars, according to a report published 30 July 2026. Deadline

What makes the sales bump striking is the age of the game receiving it. Most blockbuster titles see their sharpest sales in the first few months after launch, then settle into a long tail of steady but diminishing returns. A film tie-in reversing that curve — pushing a 2023 game back to launch-week activity levels — is the kind of cross-promotion that media conglomerates design but rarely see land with this much force.

Insomniac's next title, Marvel's Wolverine, is due for release on 15 September 2026 and is described as more linear than the open-world Spider-Man games. Whether it enjoys the same film-driven halo effect will depend on a variable Insomniac cannot control: whether a Wolverine film follows, and when. Eurogamer
