Alan Wake 2 passes 3 million copies sold as Remedy doubles down on what's next

Alan Wake 2 has sold more than 3 million copies, Remedy Entertainment disclosed in its half-year financial report covering January through June 2026.

The psychological thriller crossed the milestone during the second quarter, according to Remedy's report — a steady climb for a game that launched in October 2023 as Remedy's fastest-selling title, moving roughly a million copies at launch. By early February 2024, sales had reached 1.3 million. By the end of that year, the figure exceeded 2 million and the game had recouped its development and marketing costs. Another million copies have landed since.

Alan Wake 2 is an Epic Games-funded project, exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC — meaning it bypasses Steam, the platform that typically drives the largest share of PC game sales. Despite that narrower storefront footprint, the game has continued to sell.

The 3 million figure, though, arrives alongside a financial dip. Remedy's revenue, profit, and cash flow all declined in the first half of 2026, which the company attributed to spending on development and marketing for its next major release, Control Resonant Eurogamer. That game is scheduled for release on 24 September on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Control Resonant is a follow-up to 2019's Control, a supernatural action game that became a cult favourite. Anticipation for the sequel has already had a knock-on effect: sales of the original Control rose during the second quarter, beating the same period a year earlier.

Remedy's new CEO, who took the role in February, struck an ambitious note in the report. He said he believes both Alan Wake and Control "should have sold more" — a signal that the studio sees room to grow beyond its current audience, even as the numbers climb.

The Finnish developer now has three projects in motion. Control Resonant is nearing completion. The Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes — a return to the noir shooter series Remedy created in the early 2000s, now rebuilt under a publishing agreement with Rockstar Games parent Take-Two — are in full production. A third, unannounced project sits in what Remedy calls the production readiness stage, the phase just before full-scale development begins.

For Remedy, the picture is one of a studio spending heavily to build its next wave while its current hit keeps earning. Alan Wake 2 crossed from cult appeal to commercial durability the slow way: not at a blockbuster pace, but a million copies at a time, across nearly three years. Whether Control Resonant can do the same on day one is the question its 24 September release will answer.
