Alden Ehrenreich Joins Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Universal's 'Miami Vice '85'
Alden Ehrenreich is set to join Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Universal Pictures' Miami Vice '85, according to Deadline.
The film is an original take on the 1980s Miami Vice television series, inspired by the pilot episode of the Universal Television show. Joseph Kosinski is directing from a script by Dan Gilroy, whose screenplay is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich — the writer who executive produced the original series alongside Michael Mann. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay. Dylan Clark, through Dylan Clark Productions, produces alongside Kosinski. Universal's executive vice president of production development Sara Scott and creative executive of production development Christina Hoffrogge oversee the project for the studio, Deadline reports.
Universal has planted a firm flag on the calendar: Miami Vice '85 will be filmed for IMAX and is set for release on 19 May 2028. Production is slated to begin in 2026.
Ehrenreich arrives with considerable momentum. He won a Tony Award in June 2026 for his performance in the play Becky Shaw. He will appear opposite Helen Mirren in Anton Corbijn's A Talent for Murder, which has its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. He also stars opposite Daisy Ridley in The Last Resort, set for a theatrical release in 2027. His film credits include Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Zach Cregger's Weapons.
According to Deadline's sources, Ehrenreich fielded upwards of eight offers before choosing Miami Vice '85 — a signal of how busy the actor's dance card has become. He is represented by CAA, Linden Entertainment, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trainer and Klein.
For Universal, the project revives an IP the studio's television arm first brought to screens in 1984, this time as an IMAX-scaled theatrical event landing nearly two years out. The combination of Kosinski — whose Top Gun: Maverick proved his command of large-format spectacle — with a cast led by Jordan, Butler and now Ehrenreich gives the studio a major title to build toward as the 2028 summer corridor takes shape.
