Camila Morrone Joins Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Universal's 'Miami Vice '85'
Camila Morrone has landed a co-starring role opposite Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Miami Vice '85, Universal's big-screen adaptation of the 1980s crime series, according to Deadline.
Morrone's final chemistry tests with Butler took place over the weekend, and the studio's offer followed shortly after. The casting rounds out a lineup that already includes Alden Ehrenreich and Whitney Peak, both of whom joined the film recently.
Joseph Kosinski, whose Top Gun: Maverick grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide in 2022, will direct from a script by Dan Gilroy — the writer behind Nightcrawler and Roman J. Israel, Esq. Gilroy's screenplay builds on an earlier draft by Eric Warren Singer. The characters originate with Anthony Yerkovich, who created the television series and executive produced it alongside Michael Mann. Kosinski also produces through his company alongside Dylan Clark of Dylan Clark Productions.
Universal has planted a flag on the calendar: Miami Vice '85 is dated for release on 19 May 2028, and the film will be shot for Imax — the large-format system whose screens charge premium ticket prices and are increasingly used by studios to frame event releases as theatrical experiences worth leaving home for. Production is set to begin in 2026, though a specific start date has not been disclosed.
For Universal, the project pairs two of the most in-demand leading men in Hollywood with a director who has proven he can deliver a global blockbuster. Jordan, fresh off his Creed and Black Panther tenure, and Butler, whose post-Elvis career has stacked one major studio film after another, give the film the kind of marquee firepower that an Imax-dated summer release demands. Sara Scott, Universal's EVP of Production Development, and Creative Executive of Production Development Christina Hoffrogge are overseeing the film for the studio.
Morrone earned an Emmy nomination for her performance in Prime Video's Daisy Jones & The Six and most recently appeared in the second season of The Night Manager opposite Tom Hiddleston. Her move into a major-studio feature alongside Jordan and Butler marks a step up in scale for the actress.
The original Miami Vice ran on NBC from 1984 to 1989, turning pastel jackets, speedboats, and a synth-heavy soundtrack into a defining pop-culture aesthetic. Universal released a previous film adaptation in 2006, directed by Mann himself and starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx; it grossed $163 million worldwide against a reported $135 million budget. Whether Miami Vice '85 will aim for a period-set origin story or a contemporary reimagining has not been confirmed, though the title's "'85" suffix suggests a late-1980s setting.
