Halo Co-Creator Marcus Lehto Slams Campaign Evolved's Art Direction: "Damn Ugly"

Marcus Lehto, the co-creator of Halo and the art director who shaped the look of the franchise's original hero, Master Chief, has sharply criticised the art direction of Halo: Campaign Evolved — the recent remake of the 2001 original — in a post on his X/Twitter account, @game_fabricator (Eurogamer, 13 August 2026).
Lehto's objections centre on how the remake portrays Forerunner technology — the ancient, enigmatic civilisation whose relics players explore throughout the series. He wrote that Forerunner tech "was metal (not stone)" and was meant to feel "ancient, vast, alive, and a tomb to horrors." In Campaign Evolved, he said, it reads as "shiny metal that looks like it was built a few years ago" (Eurogamer, 13 August 2026).
His strongest words were reserved for the game's main menu, which depicts the Halo ring — the massive, weaponised space structure at the heart of the series. Lehto called it "the most offensive thing" in the remake, saying the ring "should feel massive, dark, mysterious, sinister, but also full of wonder." Instead, he wrote, it "looks like a shiny new toy — out of scale, no mystery, damn ugly" (Eurogamer, 13 August 2026).
Lehto did acknowledge that the original Bungie team — the studio that created Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001 — was "all over the place back in 2000" on Forerunner art direction. But he said the current developer, Halo Studios, "went too far in the wrong direction" (Eurogamer, 13 August 2026).
The critique marks a notable shift in tone. Before Campaign Evolved launched, Lehto was publicly enthusiastic about the project. In an October 2025 post, he called the remake "gorgeous in a way I wish we could have built it originally back in 2001" and said it "warms my heart to see Halo CE like this" (@game_fabricator, X, 26 October 2025). He also praised the game's lighting as "brilliant" (GameRant, via X, 7 August 2026) and said he "really loves" the remake's new movement, cinematics, and visuals (Instagram, 6 August 2026).
Even his earlier concerns were comparatively mild. On 6 August, GameSpot reported that Lehto, while mostly enjoying the remake, criticised it for pandering to "a new era of players with 0 attention span" (GameSpot, 6 August 2026).
A week later, that broader disappointment appears to have narrowed into something more specific: the visual identity of a world he helped build, and whether a remake built for modern hardware can still carry the weight it carried on the original Xbox.
