Halo's co-creator and the man who designed Master Chief has been playing the franchise's first-ever PlayStation release — and he has opinions.

Marcus Lehto, who helped build the original Halo: Combat Evolved at Bungie and designed the iconic supersoldier's look, took to X on 6 August 2026 to share his thoughts on Halo: Campaign Evolved, the Unreal Engine-powered campaign remaster from Halo Studios. His verdict was a mix of genuine admiration and sharp criticism aimed at his own legacy's newest incarnation.

On the bright side, Lehto was effusive about the technical achievement. "Overall, I really love the upgrades: movement, cinematics, visuals," he wrote. "Damn, the lighting is brilliant." He credited the Halo Studios team for pulling off the game's reconstruction in Unreal Engine — Epic's widely used game-development toolkit — calling it "real effort." He played on Heroic difficulty, which he noted was the level the original Bungie team used to test missions for their "fun factor," and said the Assault Rifle "feels great" while the Covenant alien weapons landed with "a solid punch" (GameSpot).

Then came the critiques. Lehto slammed the game's new hint system, which surfaces on-screen directions and waypoints more aggressively than the 2001 original. "I think the hints are too heavy-handed — pandering to a new era of players with 0% attention span," he wrote, citing an example where the game warns the player about cloaked enemies and then places markers directly over their heads. He called some of the newly added cinematics "absolutely cringe," singling out a new outro for the Assault on the Control Room mission as something he "can't un-see" (GameSpot).

Lehto even turned the criticism on his own original work. The lighting in the original game's Flood missions — sequences featuring the parasitic alien enemy that horrified players in 2001 — was, in his words, "f*ing awful" and a "mountain of sh."

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a campaign-only remaster with no multiplayer component. It adds three new prequel missions under an Operation Meteorite story arc. The game was revealed at the Halo World Championship in 2025 and is notable as the first Halo title to appear on a PlayStation console. Early sales data suggests it is off to a slow start on Sony's platform, with one analyst attributing part of the struggle to the game's price (GameSpot).

Lehto also addressed the online discourse surrounding the game. He said platforms like X "foster that hate" and argued that people playing the game together in the same room would have a "pretty damn good time."

Beyond Campaign Evolved, reports indicate that remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3 are in the works, alongside a brand-new Halo game reportedly described as "like Fortnite" — the blockbuster free-to-play, live-service shooter (GameSpot).

For Halo fans, hearing from one of the original architects — someone who remembers what the Flood missions looked like before the lighting got its glow-up — cuts through the usual marketing noise. Lehto's praise carries weight because his criticism does too.
