The man who designed Master Chief's universe has looked at a remake of his own game and delivered a blunt verdict: the ring is wrong.

Marcus Lehto, art director on the original Halo: Combat Evolved and widely credited as the father of Master Chief, publicly criticised the art direction of Halo: Campaign Evolved, a ground-up remake of the 2001 campaign rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 by Halo Studios, the Microsoft-owned team formerly known as 343 Industries. In comments reported on 14 August 2026, Lehto called the redesigned Halo ring "out of scale, no mystery, damn ugly" VGC.

Lehto's issue is specific: the Forerunner architecture — the ancient, alien-built megastructure that gives the Halo series its name — should look ancient, vast, alive, and like "a tomb to the horrors that lurked within," having seen "hundreds of millennia of conflict." Instead, he said, the new ring "looks like a shiny new toy." The main menu ring in particular, he argued, "should feel massive, dark, mysterious, sinister, but also full of wonder" VGC.

He also pointed to a lore detail. In the original game's setting, the Halo ring sits on the far fringe of the Milky Way galaxy, with the galactic disc visible in the background sky. That cosmic context, Lehto suggested, is part of what gave the original ring its sense of isolation and scale VGC.

Not everything got the same treatment. Lehto made clear his criticism is aimed at the Forerunner architecture alone, and praised the redesigns of the Covenant — the alien enemy alliance — and the Flood, a parasitic infestation, as "wonderful" VGC. On his X account (@game_fabricator), he also posted about how a single Halo ring's architecture connects to movement, cinematics, and visuals, suggesting his critique stems from a holistic design philosophy rather than a single screenshot.

Campaign Evolved is no small project. Halo Studios describes it as completely rebuilt with high-definition visuals, enhanced cinematics, refined gameplay, three new missions, an expanded arsenal, and the most mission-modifying Skulls — optional gameplay modifiers that alter rules and difficulty — of any Halo campaign, according to the game's official page Halo Waypoint. The studio has said that Unreal Engine 5 let the team move faster and lower the technical barriers between artistic intent and what appears on screen Halo Waypoint.

For a general audience: Halo: Combat Evolved was the 2001 first-person shooter that launched Microsoft's original Xbox console and turned Master Chief, a armoured super-soldier, into one of gaming's most recognisable characters. Campaign Evolved, scheduled for release on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5 in 2026, marks the first time a Halo campaign game has shipped on a Sony platform Halo Waypoint.

What makes Lehto's comments land with weight is his standing. He is not a fan with a YouTube channel. He was the art director who set the visual language for a franchise that has sold more than 80 million copies over two decades. When the person who decided what a Halo ring should look like says the new one is "out of scale" and "no mystery," that is a creative disagreement between the original architect and the current custodians of his world — one playing out in public, months before release.
