eFootball's new season kicks off with a rhythm-action mini-game by PlatinumGames
Konami's free-to-play football game eFootball rolled out its version 6.0.0 update on 13 August 2026, launching the 2026/27 season with new features headlined by a daily mini-game developed by PlatinumGames. (VGC)
The standout addition is Daily Super Play, a once-a-day mini-game that blends football with rhythm action. Each day the game selects a player at random from a special list and plays an animation of them scoring a memorable goal. The player's job is to press a button — or tap the screen on mobile — in time with an on-screen icon, much like a rhythm game. Succeed and you earn bonus content. (VGC)
During Konami's eFootball Connect broadcast, the demo featured Lionel Messi dribbling past five android-like opponents before slotting the ball home. It is a small, playful mode — not a core simulation feature — but it gives players a fresh reason to log in each day.
Version 6.0.0 also adds a Custom Tournament feature, letting users create their own tournaments and play through them together. New mini-games have been added to the existing Daily Game feature as well. (VGC)
The studio behind Daily Super Play is PlatinumGames, a developer best known for action titles like Bayonetta and NieR: Automata. The collaboration is an unusual one: PlatinumGames is an action-game specialist, not a football studio, and eFootball is a free-to-play simulation — sold and updated in seasons after launch — with a very different audience from Platinum's usual fanbase.
PlatinumGames has been through significant change in recent years. Director Hideki Kamiya left the company in 2023, and at least five other directors departed after him: Abebe Tinari, Takahisa Taura, Yusuke Miyata, Kenji Saito and Masaki Yamanaka. (VGC)
Despite those departures, the studio has stayed busy. PlatinumGames co-developed Ninja Gaiden 4 with Team Ninja, did additional work on Final Fantasy 15, and created a mini-game for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. It is also developing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, which PlatinumGames will publish itself — a project that appears to have replaced a separate Last Ronin game announced by Embracer Group in 2023. For eFootball players, the new season means updated rosters reflecting the 2026/27 campaign, plus the daily hook of Super Play and the social pull of custom tournaments. For PlatinumGames, it is another sign that the studio is willing to take on work outside its usual lane — and that Konami is looking beyond traditional football-game mechanics to keep its free-to-play title in players' daily routines.
