Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine arrives on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026, and the studio has spent the week pulling back the curtain on what players will actually do in it. A hands-on report published on the PlayStation Blog on August 13 offered the clearest look yet, alongside coverage from IGN and GameSpot, confirming a game built around a linear, story-driven campaign with room to wander off the path.

Senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed told IGN that Marvel's Wolverine is a story adventure in which Logan — the clawed mutant also known as Wolverine — is pulled through uncovering mysteries of his past, though players can go off the beaten path to find extra content (IGN). The game pushes the story from Point A to Point B rather than dropping players into an open world, a structure closer to a tightly guided action game than the city-spanning maps of Insomniac's Spider-Man titles (GameSpot).

Scattered through the levels are collectible bottles of whiskey that help Wolverine power up, and material crates holding raw materials used to unlock new suits — a suit grind familiar to anyone who played Marvel's Spider-Man 2, where a similar system let players craft alternate costumes from found resources (GameSpot). Combat trials called Nightmare Doors take players into Logan's psyche, described by the studio as "manifestations of the horrible things" in his head, each offering unique trials. One shown during IGN's hands-on session is called Shinjuku Shuffle (IGN).

For players who want to keep going after the credits, Insomniac has built in several replay systems. Mission Replay lets players return to any mission to track down collectibles they missed. New Game Plus — a mode that lets you start the story over while keeping your full loadout and progression — will be available on day one. That is a notable shift from the Spider-Man games, which launched without New Game Plus and added it in a later patch. New Game Plus in Wolverine also includes exclusive adaptations that let players crank up the difficulty or make Logan a more powerful and aggressive fighter (IGN).

Sony is marking the launch with hardware. A limited-edition Marvel's Wolverine PS5 bundle, console covers, and a new DualSense controller inspired by the game have been announced (GameSpot).

Marvel's Wolverine will be released exclusively on PlayStation 5, as confirmed by Insomniac in June (Facebook). For fans of Insomniac's previous Marvel work, the promise is a leaner, more focused adventure — one that trades the open city for a guided path, but keeps the collectible hunting and costume unlocks that gave those games their legs.
