Robot Lawnmowers Grow Up: Five Mowers Tested as Navigation Tech Settles on a Standard

The Verge has published a head-to-head test of five robot lawnmowers on a flat, three-quarter-acre property with sandy soil and centipede grass in coastal South Carolina, finding that the category has largely standardized on RTK-based satellite positioning and added secondary navigation systems to handle signal loss. RTK, or real-time kinematic positioning, combines stationary ground-based reference stations with GPS to deliver location data accurate to a centimeter or two — think of it as GPS with a correction signal that narrows the usual several-meter margin of error down to something precise enough to mow straight lines. This layered approach keeps the mower on track under tree canopy, near buildings, or in other conditions where satellite accuracy degrades.
The category has moved quickly. It weighs 41 lbs and employs what Mammotion calls Triple-Tech navigation, combining lidar, NRTK, and AI in a wire-free configuration. The navigation convergence across these brands is worth examining. Three years ago, the robot lawnmower category was fragmented between legacy perimeter-wire systems, early RTK adopters, and camera-based approaches that struggled with reliability. The current generation shows near-universal adoption of RTK as the primary positioning layer, with lidar or vSLAM as fallback, and the optional move to NetRTK mirrors the broader shift in precision agriculture and surveying toward networked correction services rather than standalone base stations.
The pricing ladder also tells a story. Entry-level wire-free mowers now start near $1,799, a threshold that puts them in the range of a high-end traditional self-propelled mower plus a few seasons of professional lawn service. At the top end, the LUBA 2 AWD 2.5-acre model at $4,499 competes with the installed cost of a multi-zone irrigation system, which is a different purchase but sits in the same homeowner-budget category.
The one outlier in the navigation taxonomy is Dreame's lidar-only approach, which sidesteps the antenna-installation requirement entirely. The trade-off, as with any indoor-robotics lineage adapting to outdoor GNSS-denied environments, is that lidar performance depends heavily on the geometric structure of the yard — open, flat lawns without perimeter features present a different challenge than the structured indoor spaces where the technology was originally developed.
