Kevin Costner stepped back into the world he helped create nearly four decades ago, narrating the pregame video for the 2026 MLB at Field of Dreams game streamed live on Netflix.
The roughly two-minute intro covered the history of baseball and what the sport has meant to fans and America, according to Deadline. Costner also joined the Netflix broadcast itself, having teased his involvement days earlier by narrating a trailer for the game on the streaming service.
The game aired on Thursday, August 13 at 7:30 PM ET, pitting the Minnesota Twins against the Philadelphia Phillies. It was the third edition of the Hollywood-meets-baseball event, played on a field near the Iowa farmhouse where the 1989 film Field of Dreams was shot.
Before first pitch, a procession of MLB Hall of Famers walked from the corn onto the grass: Goose Gossage, Cal Ripken Jr, Andre Dawson, Mike Schmidt, Bert Blyleven and Joe Torre.
The moment echoed the first Field of Dreams game in 2021, when Costner himself emerged from the cornfield beyond the outfield holding a baseball as dramatic music from the film played. That inaugural edition saw the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox enter the field through the corn alongside Costner.
The film's story — an Iowa farmer named Ray Kinsella who transforms his Dyersville cornfield into a baseball diamond — remains the backdrop MLB leans on for the event, as described on its official Field of Dreams page.
Once play began, the Phillies' Kyle Schwarber hit his MLB-best 36th and 37th home runs of the season into the cornfield. The Twins' Luke Keaschall answered with a solo shot to get Minnesota on the board.
For Costner, the appearance continues a connection that has run through all three editions of the event. His narration in 2026 replaced the on-field entrance of 2021 with a voiceover role, delivered through Netflix — the platform that carried the game live and has been building its baseball portfolio.
