Pokémon Pokopia has sold more than 5 million copies since its March release, making it the second-best-selling game on Nintendo's Switch 2 console.

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company jointly confirmed the milestone on August 14, 2026. According to VGC, the figure means roughly 21% of the Switch 2's 23.68 million-strong installed base — more than one in five console owners — has bought the game.

That puts Pokopia behind only Mario Kart World, which has moved 15 million copies, and comfortably ahead of Donkey Kong Bananza at 4.78 million. Not bad for a spin-off built by an outside studio rather than an in-house Game Freak team.

The game was developed primarily by Koei Tecmo's Omega Force, the team behind the Warriors series, with directors who previously led Dragon Quest Builders 2. In Pokopia, players control a Ditto — the purple blob Pokémon famous for copying others — that takes on a human form and befriends Pokémon to rebuild a deserted island. Think animal-crossing-style community building with a Pokémon coat of paint.

Pokopia launched with serious momentum. Nintendo announced on March 12, 2026 that the game had already surpassed 2.2 million global sales in its first four days, covering its opening weekend IGN. Five months on, that figure has more than doubled.

The game shipped as a Game Key Card — a physical cartridge that contains a digital download code rather than the game data itself, a format Nintendo introduced with the Switch 2.

Support is far from over. A free update and a first paid expansion have already been released. A second expansion is due in late 2026, with a third and final one planned for 2027, giving players a steady drip of new content well beyond launch.

For a console that only launched in 2025, having one in five owners buy a single spin-off title is a striking attach rate. It also reinforces how the Pokémon brand carries weight beyond the main RPG series — enough to outsell nearly every other title on a platform where Mario Kart sits unchallenged at the top.
