Animal Crossing: New Horizons Crosses 50 Million, Joining the All-Time Top 10 Best-Selling Games

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold 50.29 million units worldwide, crossing the 50 million mark and becoming one of the ten best-selling video games ever made.
Nintendo reported the figure through the quarter ended June 30, 2026, according to GameSpot. The life-simulation game — where players build a life on a deserted island, decorating homes and befriending animal neighbours — added 380,000 units between March 31 and June 30, 2026, nudging it past the 49.91 million it had reached at the end of the previous quarter.
At 50 million units, Animal Crossing: New Horizons became the No. 10 best-selling video game in the history of gaming, according to GameSpot. Only a handful of titles have ever reached that tier.
A Switch 2 edition of the game was released in January 2026, with existing owners able to upgrade for US$5. That refreshed version — taking advantage of Nintendo's newer console hardware — likely contributed to the continued sales momentum, though Nintendo did not break out how many of the quarter's 380,000 units came from new purchases versus upgrades.
On Nintendo's Switch platform overall, Animal Crossing: New Horizons sits at No. 2 among the console's best-selling titles, surpassed only by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 71.53 million units, according to Nintendo's investor relations data. The rest of Nintendo's Switch top-sellers, as of June 30, 2026, reads like a roster of the console's biggest franchises: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at 38.14 million, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at 34.06 million, Super Mario Odyssey at 30.80 million, and Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet at 28.46 million.
Further down the list, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield had sold 27.26 million units, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom 22.71 million, Super Mario Party 21.36 million, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe 19.10 million. These figures are worldwide consolidated life-to-date sales, and include copies bundled with hardware as well as downloadable versions, per Nintendo's IR page.
Nintendo also tracks sales for its newer Switch 2 titles separately. Mario Kart World leads that list at 15.39 million units, with Donkey Kong Bananza at 4.78 million, according to Nintendo's software sales page.
What makes the Animal Crossing milestone stand out is the company it keeps. The all-time top 10 is a short list dominated by decades-old juggernauts like Tetris, Minecraft, and Grand Theft Auto V. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, released in March 2020, reached the threshold in just over six years — a pace accelerated by its launch during a period when millions of people were staying home and seeking comfort in virtual routines.
The game's cultural footprint in 2020 was enormous, turning a franchise once seen as niche into a household name. Six years later, it is still selling — quietly, steadily, one island at a time.
