Sony Pictures Networks India to Launch Tamil Channel Sony Vizha in October

Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has set an October launch for Sony Vizha, its first dedicated Tamil-language general entertainment channel. The name and brand identity were unveiled on Indian Independence Day, 15 August, through a rendition of "Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu" — Tamil Nadu's state song. SPNI is an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation, Japan. Variety
"Vizha" means celebration or festival in Tamil. The channel's logo pairs yellow — drawn from turmeric and marigold, colours associated with celebration across Tamil Nadu — with electric blue for what SPNI describes as a contemporary, premium look. The channel is built around content rooted in Tamil culture, language and everyday life. Variety
Flagship programming lined up for Sony Vizha includes "Celebrity MasterChef Tamil" and "Tamil Idol," the latter hosted by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman. Rajaraman Sundaram serves as chief content officer – south regional at SPNI, overseeing the channel's content direction. Variety
SPNI already operates 29 channels in India spanning Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and Tamil general entertainment alongside movie, sports and kids networks. Its reach extends to more than 700 million viewers in India and distribution in over 150 countries. Until now, however, none of those channels was a dedicated Tamil-language general entertainment offering — a gap Sony Vizha is designed to fill. Variety
The channel's path to launch has been building across recent months. Sony Vizha secured both standard-definition and high-definition broadcast licences, and its two Tamil general entertainment feeds entered India's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting permitted-channel list, as reported on 17 July 2026. At that point, SPNI had not yet announced an exact launch date, programming line-up or distribution availability — details now filled in by the August reveal. BestMediaInfo Adgully
SPNI's channel-price page lists Sony Vizha HD at Rs 19, an early indicator of where the channel will sit for viewers on India's cable and direct-to-home platforms. SPNI Channel Prices
The Tamil launch follows a broader regional push by SPNI. In July 2025, Sony Sports Network announced two regional sports channels — Sony Sports Ten 4 Tamil and Sony Sports Ten 4 Telugu — with the former catering to Tamil-speaking audiences. Sony Vizha now extends that regional strategy into general entertainment. SPNI News
For Tamil audiences, October brings a new free-to-air-style destination for scripted and unscripted programming in their language, headlined by two of the biggest format names in television. For SPNI, it opens a front in one of India's most competitive language markets.
