Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Puts Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom Front and Centre
The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday arrived on Friday night, and it puts Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom dead centre in the frame. The same Doom look debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in July; this is the first time the wider public has seen it in motion. Marvel also screened the trailer at D23, its biennial fan showcase (The Hollywood Reporter).
The casting carries weight. Downey Jr. played Tony Stark across more than a decade of Marvel films, ending with Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Doomsday marks his first return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe since that film, and he is not playing Stark — he is playing the villain (The Hollywood Reporter). In Marvel's comics lore, Doctor Doom — Victor Von Doom — is a brilliant scientist who overcame a difficult childhood to become the armoured ruler of the fictional nation of Latveria (Marvel.com).
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who helmed Endgame and Infinity War, are back in the chair. Joe Russo told The Hollywood Reporter in June that the brothers feel "back to phase zero" with this film — a reset anchored by Downey Jr. as antagonist (The Hollywood Reporter). Downey Jr. himself leaned into the character at Comic-Con. He took the stage at Marvel's Hall H panel to showcase the Doom voice live (IMDB on Facebook). The next day, July 27, he posted on Instagram: "Doom doesn't do panels" (Instagram).
The cast list runs deep. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Simu Liu, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell and David Harbour all feature (The Hollywood Reporter). Evans, who played Captain America through the franchise's first phase, has teased his storyline in the film — characters teaming up to face Doom (The Hollywood Reporter).
Two more names keep circling. Ryan Reynolds appeared at Comic-Con in character as Deadpool, crashing the Doomsday panel to suggest he wanted in. Hugh Jackman then sent a clip of himself on camera with Deadpool whispering coaching off-screen, offering to join the film too (The Hollywood Reporter).

For fans, the appeal is obvious: a beloved hero actor now playing the villain, a sprawling cast that bridges multiple Marvel eras, and the Russos returning to the franchise they helped define.
