Monstropolis Is Coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2027 — With Disney's First-Ever Suspended Rollercoaster
Disney has confirmed that a Monsters, Inc.-themed land called Monstropolis will open at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida in 2027, anchored by the first suspended rollercoaster Disney has built at any of its parks worldwide. A suspended rollercoaster hangs riders beneath the track rather than seating them above it, and Disney's version will launch guests 40 feet (about 12 metres) skyward in just four seconds. The company has never built one at any of its parks — in Orlando, Anaheim, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong or Shanghai. Randy Newman, the composer behind the original Monsters, Inc. score and the song "If I Didn't Have You," has written a new original song exclusively for the land's theatrical show — his first piece composed specifically for a Disney theme park.
That show is being developed with Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic, the visual-effects studio Lucasfilm founded in 1975. It will combine high-definition video panels with physical characters, blending screen-based animation with animatronics — the robotic figures Disney has used in its attractions since the 1960s.
Michael Hundgen, Vice President Creative for the Walt Disney World portfolio at Walt Disney Imagineering — the division of Disney that designs and builds its theme parks — told Variety the land is being built to make guests feel they have stepped inside the Monsters, Inc. universe. Disney first teased a new Monsters, Inc. ride for Hollywood Studios during the previous D23 gathering in August 2024. The 2027 target gives the company roughly three years from that initial announcement to opening.
For visitors to Disney World, Monstropolis adds a major new draw to Hollywood Studios, a park that has expanded aggressively over the past decade with the additions of Toy Story Land in 2018 and Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in 2019. The land will be the first Pixar-themed area at that park since Toy Story Land opened.
