'The Challenge' Champion Tyler Duckworth Dies at 44
Tyler Duckworth, a two-time winner of MTV's long-running competition series The Challenge, was found dead in his apartment in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on the morning of Tuesday, 11 August 2026. He was 44. Chicago Tribune
The Grand Forks Police Department confirmed that officers were called for a welfare check and found Duckworth in his bathroom. Police reported no signs of foul play and nothing to suggest the death was suspicious. A cause of death has not yet been determined; an autopsy and toxicology report are pending, and results could take up to 12 weeks to complete, according to Page Six and NBC News.
Duckworth's reality television career began in 2006 on The Real World: Key West, where he met Johnny "Bananas" Devenanzio — a friendship that would define much of his time on screen. The two competed together on The Challenge: Rivals in 2011 and won the season, pairing competitors who had a personal grudge against each other into teams of two, Variety reported.
Devenanzio posted a video tribute to Duckworth on Instagram on Sunday. In the caption, he called Duckworth "the brother I never had" and wrote, "Rest easy, Tyler. You'll always be family." He also described Duckworth as "Total Bear… somedays Zaddy" and said Duckworth was best remembered for competing alongside him on The Challenge, according to the Instagram post.
Other competitors from the franchise paid tribute as well. Brad Fiorenza wrote, "Thoughts and prayers to his family. May his amazing soul live on forever in the lives he touched." Derrick Kosinski, a Challenge contestant and co-host of the Challenge Mania podcast, told People Magazine that Duckworth shared a room with him during filming of All Stars 2 and was "an amazing human being." Kosinski also recalled two moments that fans of the show would recognise: Duckworth eliminating Devenanzio in the "Bananas backpack" elimination — a famously physical one-on-one round — and going "toe to toe" with CT, another veteran competitor, for 40 minutes. Tina Barta, a contestant from Road Rules: South Pacific and multiple seasons of The Challenge, also wrote a tribute, Variety reported.
A memorial service is scheduled at Augustana Lutheran Church, according to Amundson Funeral Home.
Duckworth is survived by family in North Dakota. He held two Challenge titles and a place in the franchise's history as one of its most durable competitors — someone who showed up for the hardest rounds and stayed long enough to be remembered by them.
