Epic Games has revealed that Fortnite's next season, Chapter 7 Season 4, is called "Override" and will begin on 20 August 2026. The season is built around crossovers from other video games, and the full-length trailer Epic posted confirms a wave of characters making their Fortnite debuts — including Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails, Dr Eggman and Shadow from the Sonic series, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Joker from Persona, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Mega Man and his companion Rush, Pac-Man, and Tetris (VGC, 17 August 2026).

Epic had teased the blue blur's arrival with a nine-second clip carrying the tagline "break the rules, change the game." The full trailer and promotional artwork then confirmed Sonic alongside the broader lineup of newcomers.

For anyone unfamiliar with how Fortnite handles crossovers: the game, a free-to-play online shooter and social space, regularly licenses characters from other franchises and sells them as cosmetic skins — visual outfits that change a player's appearance but do not affect gameplay. Fortnite even has a dedicated cosmetic category for these, called the Gaming Legends Series. Nearly 70 characters from outside properties have appeared as skins before, spanning franchises such as Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Mortal Kombat, God of War, Assassin's Creed, Doom and Cyberpunk 2077.

The Override promo image also features characters who have already been in Fortnite, including Ryu and Blanka from Street Fighter, Master Chief from Halo, Geralt from The Witcher, and Lara Croft. Their placement in the artwork alongside the new arrivals signals that previously released skins will still be part of the season's broader gaming-crossover theme.

What is not yet clear is how each newcomer will be distributed. Epic has not specified which characters will be available through the Battle Pass — a seasonal progression track where players unlock cosmetics by playing — which will be sold separately in the in-game store, which will appear as sidekick characters or non-player characters, or which might fill multiple roles.

The sheer breadth of the lineup is what stands out. Crossing Pac-Man, a puzzle icon, with Sonic, a platforming mascot, and Joker, a role-playing-game lead, in the same season is unusual even by Fortnite's crossover-heavy standards. Each character arrives with their own fanbase, some of whom may not currently play the game.

Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 "Override" starts 20 August. Epic has not yet announced an end date for the season.
