Sonic the Hedgehog Races Into Fortnite's Next Season, Override

Sonic the Hedgehog is officially coming to Fortnite. Epic Games confirmed the crossover on August 11, 2026, ahead of the launch of Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, titled Override, which begins on August 20 (VGC).

The announcement came with a nine-second teaser that packs in plenty for fans to dissect. It opens on the Green Hill Zone — the iconic first level from the 1991 Sonic the Hedgehog game — with Sonic himself sprinting through a loop. Then Fortnite's banana mascot, Peely, appears running in the same animation style Sonic uses in Sonic Adventure, his 1998 3D debut. The teaser closes with the tagline: "break the rules, change the game."

There may be more to the teaser than meets the eye. Viewers spotted a cloud shaped like a Z-shaped Tetris piece in the footage, lending weight to speculation that the block-stacking puzzle game could also be part of the season's crossover plans. Independent outlets including Vice and the Times of India corroborated the August 20 launch date (Times of India; Vice). Epic had already confirmed that posters featuring Sonic's long-time villain, Dr. Eggman, will appear in the season.

For fans and leakers alike, the Sonic reveal is the first hard confirmation of what the season's theme might be. Fortnite data miners — community figures who dig through the game's files for unreleased content — had previously claimed that Chapter 7 Season 4 would centre on guest characters pulled from other video games. Sonic was among those leaked, alongside characters reportedly from Kingdom Hearts and Vampire Survivors. Prominent Fortnite leaker HypeX has also suggested potential crossovers with Persona and Minecraft.

Fortnite is no stranger to borrowing from other games. The title maintains a dedicated cosmetic category called the Gaming Legends Series, reserved specifically for skins licensed from outside video game properties. Nearly 70 characters from other franchises have appeared as playable skins to date, including figures from Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Halo, Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, God of War, Assassin's Creed, Doom and Cyberpunk 2077. Sonic would join one of the largest cross-IP rosters in gaming.

The timing also lines up with a busy period for the blue blur. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, a new kart racing game, is coming to PC this year, according to a news post on the Epic Games Store dating back to February 2025 (Epic Games Store).

For players, the Override season looks set to turn Fortnite into a meeting ground for gaming's most recognisable characters. Whether Sonic, Tetris and the rest of the rumoured guests all materialise remains to be seen — but the teaser has already got people watching frame by frame.
