Amy Schumer to Star in and Produce Comedy 'Best Divorce Ever', Headed to Toronto Sales
Amy Schumer will star in and produce the comedy Best Divorce Ever, with worldwide sales launching next month at the Toronto International Film Festival, Variety reported on 17 August 2026.
The film is written and directed by Sean Mullin, whose credits range from the theatrical narrative feature Amira & Sam to the Yogi Berra documentary It Ain't Over, released by Sony Pictures Classics and nominated for two Critics Choice Awards and a Writers Guild Award. Mullin is also currently at work on a documentary about Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
In Best Divorce Ever, Schumer plays Clarissa, who after 20 years with her partner Franklin decides the marriage is over but the relationship is not. The pair throw an "Untying the Knot" party — a celebration of what the script calls the world's most amicable divorce. Mullin told Variety the story was inspired by his own amicable divorce, and that he wanted to challenge the idea that the only successful way to end a marriage is for one person to die.
Schumer will produce alongside Matthew Lee Miller and Natalie Metzger for Vanishing Angle, the production company behind Thunder Road, Werewolves Within, Greener Grass, Kill Me, and Queens of the Dead. Financing and executive production come from Concourse Media, which is running the Toronto sales, together with its sister company Archetype Media Finance. Concourse's CEO Matthew Shreder praised Schumer's ability to take something painful and make it brutally honest and funny, and singled out Mullin's script as the reason the project came together. (Toronto, in this context, refers to the festival's film market, where sales agents pitch unfinished films to international distributors — the deals struck there determine which films reach screens in territories around the world.)
Schumer's recent credits span film and television. She most recently starred in, co-wrote and produced Netflix's Kinda Pregnant, and released the stand-up special Amy Schumer: Emergency Contact on the same platform. On the feature side, her credits include Trainwreck, I Feel Pretty, Snatched, The Humans, Unfrosted, and If. She created, wrote, directed and starred in the Peabody and Emmy-winning Comedy Central series Inside Amy Schumer, and followed a similar multi-hyphenate role on Hulu's comedy-drama Life & Beth.
Mullin's producing work includes Bob Trevino Likes It, which collected more than 30 festival awards — among them the Jury Award and Audience Award at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival.
No production start date, release date, or additional casting has been announced. What is clear from the Toronto placement is the commercial intent: Concourse is positioning a Schumer-led comedy as a buyable property for international distributors before a single frame is shot.
