Spider-Man: Brand New Day holds the U.K. box office as the global haul crosses $2 billion

Sony's Spider-Man: Brand New Day topped the U.K. and Ireland box office for a third straight weekend, adding £6.1 million ($8.3 million) and lifting its local total to $106.5 million after 20 days of release, according to Variety. The film has now crossed $2 billion globally, becoming the second-fastest movie ever to reach that mark and only the eighth to do so, per Deadline. In the domestic market — the United States and Canada — its third weekend brought in $70 million, the second-best third frame on record, surpassing Avatar and its first sequel, Rotten Tomatoes reported on August 17.
Universal's The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan, held second place in the U.K. and Ireland with $5 million in its fifth weekend, pushing its local cumulative total to $93.4 million. The Nolan epic is the director's biggest-ever box office hit, Screen Daily reported on August 10. Back on their shared opening weekend, the combined earnings of both films — more than $400 million — made it the biggest box office weekend of all time, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Warner Bros.' The End of Oak Street, starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, opened in third with $2.8 million. Trafalgar Releasing's music documentary Katseye: Wild Hearts took fourth with a $981,457 event-cinema launch — a one-night or limited-run model that specialist distributor Trafalgar has used for concerts and stage captures. Paramount's Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie slid to fifth in its second weekend, adding $940,306 for a $4.3 million running total.
Disney's Toy Story 5 claimed sixth in its ninth frame, adding $714,080 to reach $74.7 million. Universal's Minions & Monsters followed in seventh with $546,233 in its seventh week, taking its cume to $23.2 million.
A24's Tony, Matt Johnson's film about Anthony Bourdain starring Dominic Sessa and Antonio Banderas, debuted in eighth with $544,524. Disney's live-action Moana took ninth in its sixth week, collecting $441,419 for a $17.2 million total. Rounding out the top 10, TGS Cinemas Limited launched the Indian drama Vishwanath & Sons with $378,751.
The U.K. and Ireland figures are studio estimates collected by Variety; final Monday actuals may differ slightly. What makes the frame notable is the distance between the top two and everything below: Brand New Day and The Odyssey alone account for more than three-quarters of the weekend's combined top-ten gross, a gap that two blockbuster holdovers can open when a market has little fresh competition in the top tier.
