Performer Saves Paddington The Musical With Four Hours' Rehearsal After All Covers Fall Through

Rose O'Reilly had four hours to learn an entire leading role. She pulled it off, and 1,100 people in the Savoy Theatre got their show.

O'Reilly, a member of the Paddington The Musical ensemble, stepped into the part of Millicent Clyde — the production's lead antagonist — after every designated cover for the role was unavailable. Victoria Hamilton-Barritt, who normally plays Clyde, was on holiday abroad at the time. All three of the production's official covers were unable to perform for various reasons, according to WhatsOnStage.

O'Reilly was not one of those covers. She was not a designated understudy for the part at all. She learned the entire role in four hours and performed it completely off book — knowing every line, lyric, blocking note, and the character's full arc. Millicent Clyde's musical numbers include "Pretty Little Dead Things," one of the show's standout villain songs.

Producer Sonia Friedman addressed the audience from the stage before the evening performance to give special recognition to O'Reilly. The company presented her with flowers during the curtain call. Friedman and co-producer Eliza Lumley issued a statement praising O'Reilly for saving the performance. The Stage independently reported the same account of the four-hour turnaround.

O'Reilly later described the experience on Instagram as "the craziest 24 hours of my life" and said playing Millicent Clyde was a role she had dreamed of.

What makes this stand out is the arithmetic of it. A West End musical of this scale runs with a cast and crew numbering in the dozens, playing to houses of over a thousand people a night. When the performer holding a leading role is away and every trained replacement is also unavailable, the options narrow to two: cancel the show, or find someone who can do it. O'Reilly, already in the building as part of the ensemble, was that someone.

Paddington The Musical is based on Michael Bond's A Bear Called Paddington books and the Paddington films. It features music and lyrics by Tom Fletcher, a book by Jessica Swale, and direction by Luke Sheppard. The production began West End previews at the Savoy Theatre on 1 November 2025, with the title character kept hidden from audiences until that first preview. It has since extended its booking at the Savoy multiple times, most recently through to 14 February 2027. A Broadway transfer — a move of the production from London into a New York commercial house — is planned for spring 2027 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

The cast list from the show's rehearsal period, first published by WhatsOnStage in October 2025, named O'Reilly among the ensemble alongside Esme Bacalla-Hayes, Ben Redfern, and Hugo Rolland. On the night it mattered, the ensemble member became the lead.
