Hulu Renews 'Good American Family' for Season 2, Pivoting to Anthology Format With the Lorena Bobbitt Case

Hulu has renewed Good American Family for a second season, and the show is changing shape: it will become an anthology, meaning each season tells a different true story with a new cast. Season 2 will centre on the case of Lorena and John Bobbitt, a Virginia couple whose story ignited a media firestorm in the 1990s. Variety reported the renewal on 19 August 2026, with Deadline having first broken the news.

The second season's logline describes it as a limited series inspired by the Bobbitts' story, a case that turned domestic trauma into round-the-clock tabloid entertainment. Lorena Bobbitt will serve as a consultant on the series, according to an individual with knowledge of the situation cited by Variety. The 1993 case became one of the most sensationalised stories of the decade, and Amazon previously examined it in the 2019 docuseries Lorena, which detailed years of abuse Lorena said she endured from her husband.

Season 1 of Good American Family told the story of Natalia Grace, a young girl with a rare form of dwarfism adopted in 2010 by Kristine and Michael Barnett. That season starred Ellen Pompeo in her first major acting role since she stepped back from Grey's Anatomy. Pompeo will return for Season 2 as an executive producer but is not expected to appear on screen.

Series creator and executive producer Katie Robbins is back for the new season. Laura Holstein executive produces through Calamity Jane, the banner she shares with Pompeo, alongside Andrew Stearn. 20th Television, the Disney-owned studio, remains the producing studio behind the series.

The anthology shift means Good American Family now operates like American Crime Story or True Detective — each instalment is self-contained, with a fresh cast and a new real-life case to dramatise. For the writers' room and crew, that means building a show from scratch each cycle rather than continuing a single storyline. For viewers, it means a new entry point with every season; you do not need to have watched the Natalia Grace season to follow the Bobbitt season.

The show joins a crowded field of scripted series drawing from real-life headlines. What sets this one apart is the direct involvement of Lorena Bobbitt herself as a consultant, a role that gives the subject of the drama a voice in how her own story is told.
