Sean McNamara to Direct Faith-Based Drama 'Blank Canvas,' Based on Marcy Gregg's Memory-Loss Memoir
Sean McNamara will direct Blank Canvas, a faith-based drama adapted from Marcy Gregg's 2022 memoir, with the project now in development at Brookwell McNamara Entertainment, according to Deadline.
The story at the film's centre is startling. At 30, Gregg suffered a serious medical complication during childbirth that erased 13 years of her memory. She is an abstract artist by profession, and her memoir — published by Tyndale House Publishers in 2022 — recounts the experience of rebuilding a life from what was effectively a blank slate. As a public speaker, Gregg shares a message of hope and purpose at conferences and community events, according to her personal website.
McNamara will produce alongside David Brookwell. Will Crenshaw, based in Beaumont, Texas, serves as executive producer. No cast or start date has been announced; the film is still in development.
McNamara's recent work sits squarely in the biopic lane. He most recently directed Soul On Fire, Reagan, and Bau: Artist at War, per Deadline. His best-known credit remains Soul Surfer (2011), the story of surfer Bethany Hamilton, which grossed close to $50 million in worldwide receipts. He is described on his website as an award-winning director, writer, and producer of family dramas, with work carried on Netflix, Disney Channel, Hulu, and CBS. That site also lists him as a BAFTA winner and five-time Emmy nominee, though those credits could not be independently dated.
McNamara has a separate feature, Home, also headed toward a 2026 release; that film reunites him with cinematographer Shawn Seifert, according to a press release published in July.
The faith-based film market has been a steady, if uneven, segment of the theatrical landscape — one where modest budgets can yield outsized returns when a title connects with its intended audience. McNamara's track record with inspirational true stories, from Hamilton to Reagan, makes him a natural fit for Gregg's material.
