Grand Theft Auto VI has generated roughly US$429 million in preorder revenue across 4.38 million copies through August 18, according to sales tracker estimates from the research firm Sensor Tower. That is nearly two months of preorders for a game that does not release until November 19, and it is happening before Rockstar's full marketing campaign has even begun. GameSpot

Preorders opened on June 25. The standard edition is priced at US$80 and the Ultimate Edition at US$100. Sensor Tower estimates that 89% of preorder buyers are choosing the more expensive Ultimate Edition, meaning fewer than one in ten are opting for the standard version. GamesIndustry.biz

The platform split is heavily tilted toward PlayStation. Sensor Tower reports that 77% of preorders are on PS5 and 23% on Xbox Series X|S, which works out to about 3.38 million copies and US$331 million on Sony's console alone. TweakTown

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar, has called the preorder numbers "unprecedented" but has not released an official figure of its own. The Sensor Tower data — pulled from the firm's live weekly tracker of preorder sales, revenue and digital ad spend across PlayStation, Xbox and Steam — remains unconfirmed by the publisher. An analyst cited in the same report suggested GTA 6 could reach 25 million preorders by launch, which would translate to roughly US$2 billion in revenue before a single copy is sold at retail. That figure is a projection, not a confirmed total.

The US$80 standard-edition price is a point of attention for the industry, as major game releases have traditionally launched at US$60 or US$70. Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick said the company wanted the standard edition to remain "in reach for most people." For context, Grand Theft Auto V launched at US$60 in 2013, which adjusting for inflation is roughly US$85 today.

What makes the preorder figures striking is how much revenue is arriving before the game's promotional push. Rockstar's full marketing campaign had not started as of the report. Fans are expecting it to kick off with a trailer scheduled for August 27 on Netflix, meaning the $429 million figure could climb sharply once wider advertising begins.

GTA 6 is set to release on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, following multiple delays from its original launch window. There is no PC version announced for release date.
