Nearly nine in ten GTA 6 preorders so far are for the US$100 Ultimate Edition rather than the US$80 standard version, according to data from analytics firm Sensor Tower — a premium split the company says it has never seen before in a video game preorder period. GamesIndustry.biz

The split is 90% premium on Xbox and 88.5% on PlayStation. Take-Two Interactive, GTA 6's publisher, confirmed the trend without giving numbers: CEO Strauss Zelnick told CNBC that preorders were "skewing more to the premium edition." GamesIndustry.biz

Karl Kontus, Sensor Tower's SVP and general manager of video game insights, said typical premium-edition shares run 10–20% during preorders. A 50% share would be a great number. Ninety percent is unprecedented in his experience.

The standard edition at US$79.99 already sits above the industry-standard US$70 price point for new games. The US$99.99 Ultimate Edition bundles additional vehicles, weapons, and a custom mod shop — a car-customisation feature. GamesIndustry.biz

Preorders opened on 25 June 2025 and currently stand at roughly 4 million, according to Sensor Tower's tracking. Kontus noted that under normal preorder trajectories — where most orders arrive in the final weeks before launch — that figure could scale to 40 million or more by release day on 19 November. A separate Sensor Tower estimate projects preorders could reach around 25 million, generating approximately US$2 billion in revenue. Gamespot

That US$2 billion, Kontus said, would cover GTA 6's development cost and the majority of its marketing spend — before a single copy is actually sold at launch. Rockstar Games has not disclosed a production or marketing budget for the title. Gamespot

What makes this stand out is the sheer gap between GTA 6 and ordinary release economics. If preorder revenue alone can recoup the cost of one of the most expensive games ever made, the actual launch figures will be the part the industry watches closest.

Take-Two described preorder numbers as "unprecedented" but declined to disclose a specific figure, saying it did not want to mislead investors. Gamespot

Kontus also pushed back on viral claims that GTA 6 had already been pre-ordered 30–50 million times. In a LinkedIn post on 14 July, he called those figures inaccurate and said the real number was likely "an order of magnitude lower" — meaning closer to single-digit millions at that point. LinkedIn

The full marketing campaign has not yet begun. Kontus said it is expected to kick off with a trailer on 27 August, premiering on Netflix. The game launches on 19 November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and will be download-only — no physical disc. Gamespot | GamesIndustry.biz

Kontus expects the Ultimate Edition's share to decline over time as more price-sensitive buyers enter in the final weeks, settling closer to a 50/50 split. Even so, he said it should remain well above the industry standard. He also suggested Rockstar left money on the table by not offering a US$150 edition. GamesIndustry.biz

For context on those numbers: GTA 5, released in 2013, has sold over 200 million copies lifetime. Whatever GTA 6 does at launch, the preorder window is already operating on a scale that most games never reach in total sales.
