Game Science Shows 15 Minutes of Black Myth: Zhong Kui Gameplay

Game Science has released 15 minutes of Black Myth: Zhong Kui gameplay footage, giving players their first real look at the action game's combat and its protagonist — the Chinese mythological figure Zhong Kui, a deity associated with vanquishing evil spirits. The footage was published on August 20, 2026, on the studio's official YouTube channel and website (Eurogamer).
The demo suggests a shift in pacing from Game Science's previous title, Black Myth: Wukong, which released in August 2024 and went on to sell over 20 million copies in its first month. Where Wukong leaned heavily on dramatic one-on-one boss fights, the Zhong Kui footage places greater emphasis on fighting non-boss enemies — the regular adversaries that fill the world between major encounters. The combat animations are detailed and tactile, with weapons tangling together in extended parries where blades lock and grind before one side breaks free.
Roughly halfway through the video, a boss appears: a large, moth-like humanoid with shell-like wings covered in barnacles and scales. It is an unsettling design, the kind of creature that looks like it crawled out of the ocean rather than a Chinese folktale — though Chinese mythology has its share of strange hybrid beings.
One of the more interesting mechanics on display lets the protagonist summon a warrior companion and then directly take control of them, switching characters mid-fight to deal major damage. It is a twist on the single-character action formula Wukong used, and it hints at a more flexible approach to combat encounters.
Game Science addressed the connection to its breakout hit directly. The studio said it hopes to "preserve the many things players loved" about Black Myth: Wukong, but that Zhong Kui will be "tailored to the new protagonist" (Eurogamer). In other words, fans of the first game's feel should find familiar ground here, but the new lead character brings his own moves and identity.
The studio also urged caution. Game Science stressed that the game remains a work in progress and that the released footage may differ from the final product. "Some of what we're exploring is still experimental," the studio said (Eurogamer).
Black Myth: Zhong Kui was first announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live in August 2025 with a brief teaser — a yearly industry showcase held in Cologne, Germany. A six-minute in-engine video followed in February 2026 for Chinese New Year, titled "For the Year of the Horse: Savor the Feast, Slumber in Peace." But this new 15-minute clip is the first substantial look at how the game actually plays.
The game is in development for PC and "major consoles," according to Game Science, and does not yet have a release date.
For fans of Black Myth: Wukong, the footage offers reassurance that the studio's follow-up is taking shape while signalling that it will not simply be more of the same. The companion-swapping mechanic, the heavier focus on regular enemies, and a new mythological protagonist all point to a game finding its own identity rather than resting on a winning formula. With no release window yet announced, this first look is what Game Science is choosing to show — and it is enough to keep attention on the studio.
