Tesla's Robotaxi Fleet in Austin Goes Fully Driverless

Tesla's Robotaxi fleet in Austin is now operating fully driverless, with all monitored vehicles in the city running without human safety monitors onboard. The shift comes roughly seven months after Tesla began unsupervised operations with a single vehicle on 22 January 2026 Electrive.
The crowdsourced web app Robotaxi Tracker, created by Ethan McKanna, recorded that all 170 Tesla Robotaxi rides in Austin monitored over the past two weeks were unsupervised, involving 54 different vehicles Engadget. The Austin figure is a sharp reversal from earlier this summer, when the unsupervised fleet appeared to be shrinking. Tesla's autonomous ride-hailing push has moved in bursts rather than a steady climb: a single-vehicle launch in January, a reported pullback within days, fleet numbers dwindling to the low dozens by early summer, and now a sudden jump to 54 unsupervised vehicles in Austin alone. The remote-driver revelation further muddies the waters on what constituted "unsupervised" in earlier months. The Cybercab launch, if it proceeds this month, would eliminate that ambiguity for the new vehicle class by design, since the absence of controls makes human intervention structurally impossible. Whether the current Model Y-based fleet can sustain fully driverless operations at scale remains an open question that only continued monitoring will answer.
The stakes extend beyond ride counts.
