Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler have suited up as Miami's undercover detectives, with first-look photos from "Miami Vice '85" confirming filming has started.

The images, reported by Variety on 12 October 2026, show the two stars in character for the first time. Jordan plays Ricardo Tubbs. Butler plays Sonny Crockett.

The film takes its cue from the 1980s television detective show that ran from 1984 to 1989. In that original series, Don Johnson starred as Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas played Tubbs. The pair are police detectives working undercover in Miami, Florida, a set-up built around fast boats, fast cars and cases that blur the line between cop and criminal.

The new cast around Jordan and Butler is large. It also includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland and Michael Irby.

Behind the camera is Joseph Kosinski. He directed "Top Gun: Maverick" and "F1", two large-scale theatrical releases known for practical action and aerial and racing photography. His hiring points to a version of "Miami Vice" built for the big screen rather than a straight television remake.

The film is dated for theatres on 19 May 2028. That places it in the early summer corridor, the stretch from May to July when studios programme their biggest releases. It will also be shot for IMAX, the extra-large screen format with taller images and expanded sound, according to Deadline.

What makes this stand out is the title. The "'85" fixes the story in a specific year of the original run. For fans, this means neon Miami, but with a period setting rather than a present-day update.
