Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Cracked and Shared Online a Week Before Release

A pirated PC version of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy began circulating online roughly a week before the game's 27 August release date, after its copy protection was reportedly cracked.
News of the leak first spread on the Plague Tale subreddit, where moderators moved quickly to contain it. They warned that any further posts about the leak — or requests for information sourced from it — would result in a permanent ban, and that the subreddit would be locked down for a week if the situation continued. Eurogamer contacted Asobo Studio, the developer behind the game, for comment on the leak.
The game itself is the third entry in the Plague Tale series, published by Focus Entertainment Publishing and developed by Asobo Studio. It introduces a new lead character, Sophia, who previously appeared in A Plague Tale: Requiem. The earlier games followed Amicia and Hugo; Resonance shifts the focus to Sophia's connection to the Macula, a supernatural thread running through the series, set 15 years before the original game's events. The story also follows the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur along a parallel timeline.
On the gameplay side, Resonance moves away from the stealth-focused design the series is known for, leaning into more direct combat. Players collect a variety of blades and use abilities that let Sophia rope in enemies from a distance — a shift toward aggression over hiding.
Kotaku, which reported the leak on 20 August, framed it as part of a broader pattern of PC games appearing online before their official launch dates. The report noted that Resonance offers no paid early access option, meaning no legitimate route existed for anyone to be playing the game before 27 August. The copies in circulation were unambiguously pirated, made playable after the game's DRM — the copy-protection software publishers use to prevent unauthorised copying — was bypassed.
For Asobo and Focus Entertainment, the leak arrives at a delicate moment: the final stretch before launch, when marketing, review embargoes and pre-order campaigns are all timed to build toward release day. How the publisher responds remains to be seen, though the studio had not issued a public statement as of 21 August.
What makes this particular leak notable is the timing. A one-week head start for pirated copies is enough to seed spoilers, gameplay footage and early impressions across forums and social media — all before the first paying customer has installed the game. For a story-driven series like Plague Tale, where narrative surprises are a core part of the experience, that exposure carries a different weight than it would for a competitive multiplayer title.
The Plague Tale subreddit's lockdown threat captures the tension from the other side: communities that exist to celebrate a game are now forced to police themselves against the very thing they have been waiting for. Asobo Studio lists Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy on its official website as an action-adventure title slated for 2026, with a confirmed release date of 27 August.
