Spider-Man: Brand New Day Wins Fourth Weekend, Eyes All-Time Domestic Record
Spider-Man: Brand New Day held the No. 1 domestic box-office spot for a fourth straight weekend, with Sony projecting a $36.5 million three-day add that would push the film past 2021's No Way Home to become the third highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office — domestic meaning the United States and Canada. The studio projects the domestic cume will reach $852.4 million through Sunday, making it Sony Pictures' highest-grossing domestic release of all time, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Friday's take was $9.8 million.
The Spider-Man juggernaut fended off two new wide releases. Insidious: Out of the Further, the sixth film in the long-running horror franchise from Sony, opened in second place with $10.6 million on Friday, including $3 million from Thursday previews. Sony projects a $23.7 million opening weekend from 3,330 North American theatres. The film, which stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Lin Shaye, carries an $18 million production budget and arrived with a 60 percent critics' rating and 70 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences awarded it a C+ CinemaScore — the customer-satisfaction grade that firms collect on opening night — tying 2023's Insidious: The Red Door for the lowest mark in the series.
Lionsgate's Mutiny landed further down the chart. The Jason Statham action vehicle grossed $2.8 million on Friday, including $700,000 in Thursday previews, and was projected to settle in sixth place with $7.4 million for the weekend from 2,600 screens. Statham plays a former Marine framed for murder; the film was directed by Jean-François Richet and produced by MadRiver Pictures and Punch Palace Productions on a $40 million budget. Audiences gave it a B+ CinemaScore, while Rotten Tomatoes showed a 50 percent critics' score against an 80 percent audience score — a gap not uncommon for star-driven action fare. The opening outpaced Statham's previous film, Shelter, which debuted to $5.5 million domestically.
Boxoffice Pro's long-range forecast, published on 31 July, had projected Insidious: Out of the Further to open between $25 million and $35 million and Mutiny between $8 million and $12 million. Both films are tracking toward the lower ends of those ranges.
Globally, Deadline projected Spider-Man: Brand New Day to add $85 million or more worldwide in its fourth frame, with Insidious: Out of the Further eyeing $50 million-plus globally in its debut, according to Deadline.
