Rebel Wolves has reversed course on one of the most contentious pre-launch details for The Blood of Dawnwalker: the game will offer a 60 FPS Performance Mode on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X, arriving in a day-one patch when the title releases on September 3.

The announcement on August 24 came after players pushed back hard over the weekend, when the studio shared its graphical settings and confirmed no 60 FPS option for any console at launch. The initial plan offered a Quality mode at 30 FPS and a Balanced mode at 40 FPS — the latter a middle-ground setting that splits the difference between visual fidelity and smoothness, targeting 40 frames per second rather than the standard 30 or the preferred 60. PS5 Pro, Sony's higher-end console released in late 2024, would also receive overall visual enhancements. But no mode would push past 40 FPS on any console. That did not sit well with players who expect 60 FPS as a baseline on current-generation hardware. VGC

Rebel Wolves took to its official X account to address the feedback directly. The studio said the Performance Mode had already been in development but was still being tested and was not yet ready to commit to at launch. Following the community response, the team focused on finishing those tests and confirmed Performance Mode for day one. VGC

With the reversal, PS5 Pro, PS5, and Xbox Series X will now offer three modes at launch: Performance targeting 60 FPS, Balanced targeting 40 FPS, and Quality targeting 30 FPS. The studio has not yet detailed how Performance Mode will trade off visual settings to reach the higher frame rate, nor whether Xbox Series S — the lower-spec console in Microsoft's lineup — will receive the same options.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is a narrative-driven action-RPG directed by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who served as game director on The Witcher 3 and held senior production and design roles on Cyberpunk 2077. Rebel Wolves, the studio he co-founded, has built anticipation largely on that pedigree — developers from two of the most celebrated RPGs of the past decade forming a new studio to build an original dark-fantasy world.

For console players, the addition of a 60 FPS option removes the main complaint that surfaced over the weekend and brings the game's feature set in line with what most current-generation releases offer on day one. Whether Performance Mode holds a stable 60 across demanding scenes, and whether the Balanced mode's 40 FPS target proves a better trade-off for those who want sharper visuals, will become clear once the game is in players' hands on September 3.
