Sam Waterston, Campbell Scott and Chris Chalk Join NBC Drama 'Line of Fire' as Guest Stars

Sam Waterston, Campbell Scott and Chris Chalk have signed on as guest stars in NBC's upcoming drama series Line of Fire, according to Deadline (Deadline, 24 August 2026).

The series centres on the Hollingsworth family — Mike (Peter Krause) and Jane (Hope Davis) — a household of law enforcement agents who work cases across the FBI, US Marshals, Secret Service and Department of Justice. When a case that looks straightforward spirals into a deadly conspiracy, the family must use their combined expertise to protect each other and track down the killer.

Waterston, long familiar to television audiences from Law & Order and The Newsroom, will play former President Thomas Barnes. His character shares a deep bond with Mike, who is still haunted by a close call from his time on a protective detail. Scott takes the role of Terry, a US Senator dating Jane. Terry wants to take the relationship to the next level, but he understands that Jane's first loyalties are to her work and her family. Chalk plays the current President, Kayana — a strong and decisive leader who is nonetheless worried his polling numbers are slipping and is looking for a way to course-correct.

The rest of the ensemble includes Kat Cunning, Tommy O'Brien, Taylor Bloom and Charlie Barnett. Joshua Safran created the series and serves as writer and executive producer, partnering with Jenna Bush Hager and her producing partner Ben Spector. The show comes from Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, and falls under a first-look deal — meaning the studio gets first option on projects — that Hager's Thousand Voices production company has with Universal Studio Group.

The casting news adds three established names to a series that has been assembling its ensemble through the summer. Waterston brings decades of television credit to a guest role; Scott, recently seen in The Good Wife spin-off The Good Fight, adds political gravitas as a sitting senator; and Chalk, whose credits include Gotham and The Newsroom, steps into the Oval Office as a president wrestling with approval ratings.

For viewers, the guest cast rounds out a family-and-conspiracy drama that spans multiple federal agencies and two presidential administrations — one former, one current — with personal stakes woven through the procedural spine. No premiere date has been announced.
