Hulu Cancels Mindy Kaling's 'Not Suitable for Work' After One Season
Hulu has cancelled Not Suitable for Work after a single season, ending Mindy Kaling's first sole creator credit since The Mindy Project. The streaming platform will not move forward with a second season, Variety reported on 25 August 2026.
The comedy premiered on 2 June 2026, dropping its first three episodes at once before shifting to a weekly Tuesday schedule. Nine episodes ran in total, with the season finale airing on 23 June. The series followed work-obsessed 20-somethings chasing professional success and personal happiness in Murray Hill, Manhattan — a neighbourhood that has housed its share of television dreamers.
Kaling created the show and executive produced it alongside showrunner Charlie Grandy and Howard Klein of 3 Arts Entertainment. It was produced under Kaling's Kaling International label in association with Warner Bros. Television, the studio where both Kaling and Grandy hold overall deals (meaning the studio has first look at their projects). Kaling described the series as completing her self-based television trilogy, a run that also includes Netflix's Never Have I Ever and HBO Max's The Sex Lives of College Girls, Deadline reported in June.
The cast was led by Ella Hunt as AJ, an investment banker from Boston who relocates to New York, and Avantika as her best friend Abby, an aspiring celebrity stylist. Across the hall sat three neighbours: Davis (Will Angus), AJ's co-worker nursing a crush on her; Josh (Jack Martin), a nepo-baby journalist; and Kel (Nicholas Duvernay), a med school dropout chasing acting. Jay Ellis also starred, with a recurring guest roster that included Victor Garber, Constance Wu, Ego Nwodim and Judy Gold.
Warner Bros. TV now plans to shop the series to potential new homes — a common path when a cancelled show's studio hopes another platform picks it up. Whether any buyer bites is not yet known.
The cancellation closes a short chapter for a show that carried some weight for Kaling. The Mindy Project, her previous sole creator credit, began on Fox for three seasons before moving to Hulu for three more. Her more recent track record has been stronger: Never Have I Ever ran four seasons on Netflix, The Sex Lives of College Girls has aired on HBO Max, and Netflix's Running Point was renewed for a third season. Not Suitable for Work was the first of her titles not to earn a second season.
Variety critic Alison Herman found glimmers of promise in the show but was not won over overall, spotting "glimmers of a more biting, memorable take on young people juggling jobs and love in New York City" across the nine episodes. Kaling and Grandy had pitched the series as a portrait of the Gen Z workforce, complete with love triangles.
For the cast and crew, the news means a wrap. For Kaling, it is a rare miss in a catalogue that has otherwise held. And for anyone who found something in those nine episodes, Warner Bros. TV is still looking for a second act.
