Spider-Man: Brand New Day Overtakes Avengers: Endgame to Become No. 2 Domestic Film Ever
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has eclipsed Avengers: Endgame to become the second-highest-grossing film in domestic box office history. The Sony release reached $858.4 million in North American ticket sales — domestic, meaning the United States and Canada — narrowly edging the $858.3 million that Endgame banked in 2019, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The all-time domestic record still belongs to 2015's Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens, which holds at $936.6 million. That is the next summit, though it sits $78 million above where Brand New Day now stands with its run still ongoing.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal, the film launched in theatres on July 31 and was approaching its fifth weekend of release as of Sunday. Along the way it has rewritten several milestones: the biggest domestic opening weekend ever at $360 million, the highest-grossing first week in domestic box office history, and the fastest climb to $800 million domestically, getting there in just 19 days. It also became the second-fastest film — after Endgame — to reach $1 billion globally.
Globally, Brand New Day sat at No. 6 on the all-time worldwide box office rankings as of Sunday, with $2.22 billion, having already moved past The Force Awakens' $2.07 billion. The film is on track to overtake Titanic, which holds No. 5 globally with $2.26 billion. Ne Zha 2 occupies the No. 4 worldwide spot at $2.27 billion.
The latest domestic figures followed a fourth weekend in which the film grossed $39 million across 4,006 theatres, according to Deadline. At that point it sat roughly $3.4 million short of Endgame's domestic total. Variety reported $855 million domestic and $2.22 billion worldwide through the same frame. The Monday confirmation pushed it past the Marvel crossover's record.
Brand New Day also became Sony's highest-grossing domestic release, surpassing the studio's own Spider-Man: No Way Home after briefly occupying the No. 3 all-time domestic slot over the weekend.
The film's run has been a bright spot in a summer where not every title has kept pace. Supergirl was among recent releases that underperformed amid signs of audience fatigue with the superhero genre, per The Hollywood Reporter. New entries that weekend included Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars with Jacob Elordi, the revived Coyote vs. Acme, and the horror-comedy Buddy.
More broadly, the 2026 domestic box office crossed the $7 billion mark as of Sunday, running 20.4 percent ahead of 2025 at the same point, according to Rentrak. This summer's releases combined for an estimated $4.444 billion domestically — 25.5 percent above last year — with the all-time summer record still held by 2013 at $4.75 billion.
