Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 delivered the first substantial look at Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, a third-person action-adventure that leans hard into combat and spell-casting rather than replicating the tabletop role-playing experience the franchise is built on.

The lengthy gameplay trailer premiered during the Gamescom opening showcase on August 25, 2026, according to GameSpot. It showed off third-person spell-slinging combat — the player hurls magic in real time, action-game style, rather than rolling dice or managing character sheets.

The game follows a protagonist named Katri, a veteran warrior navigating Ravenloft's Domains of Dread — a collection of horror-themed regions within the D&D universe. The trailer featured Darkon, described as the largest and most powerful of those domains. Katri journeys through this world alone, though developer Invoke Studios said players may encounter other characters and form alliances with them during the adventure. You always play as Katri, though.

A familiar voice has joined the cast. Maggie Robertson, known for playing Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil: Village and Orin the Red in Baldur's Gate 3, will voice Tasha — a well-known D&D character who serves as Katri's patron. In the game's story, Tasha grants Katri immense power in exchange for obedience, a classic warlock bargain from the tabletop rules.

Warlock was first announced at The Game Awards 2025 in December, where a heavy metal trailer introduced Katri. Since then, details have been sparse. The Gamescom reveal marks the first time the public has seen the game in motion.

Invoke Studios, formerly known as Tuque Studios, previously developed Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, a 2021 action game. The studio is now working under publisher Wizards of the Coast, which owns the Dungeons & Dragons brand.

The game is described on its official website as a dark fantasy open-world adventure inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. While the franchise is most famous for its tabletop roots — pen-and-paper campaigns guided by a Dungeon Master — Warlock appears to prioritise moment-to-moment combat over the role-playing systems that define that experience.

For fans, the Gamescom trailer signals a clear direction: this is an action game first, a D&D game second. The setting, characters and lore are drawn from the franchise, but the moment-to-moment play looks closer to a third-person action title than a digital tabletop session.

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is slated for release in 2027. No specific date or platform information has been announced beyond that window.
