Metro 2039 Trailer at Gamescom 2026: A New Protagonist, a Fallen Hero, and a Studio at War
4A Games unveiled a new gameplay trailer for Metro 2039 at Gamescom Opening Night Live on 25 August 2026, giving players their deepest look yet at the next entry in the post-apocalyptic survival series. A second trailer, titled "Renegade," followed the same day, offering another glimpse of the game's new protagonist, known as the Stranger (GameSpot, 25 August 2026).
Metro 2039 is scheduled to launch in February 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game takes players back to Moscow, where the Spartan Order — once a force for good in the series' underground world — has evolved into an authoritarian movement called the Novareich. Its leader is Hunter, the same Spartan Ranger fans will recognise from Metro 2033. The Stranger comes out of exile to take down the Novareich and Hunter himself.
4A Games has described Metro 2039 as a story about consequences: the cost of silence, the horror of tyranny, and the price of freedom. Those themes carry a weight that is not purely fictional. The studio has said it drew from its own experience developing the game while enduring the ongoing war in Ukraine.
That background matters. 4A Games was founded in Kyiv in 2005 by a team of industry veterans and built its reputation on the Metro franchise — Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, Metro Redux, and Metro Exodus, the studio's most recent release (4A Games). In 2014, the studio relocated its headquarters to Malta, moving more than 50 team members and their families out of Ukraine. The company now operates as a multinational studio with offices in both Malta and Ukraine.
For players, the new trailer signals a return to the series' signature blend of survival horror and first-person action. Craftable weapons return, letting players build guns to suit their playstyle. The Stranger replaces the franchise's previous protagonists, and the conflict with Hunter sets up a personal reckoning within a world that has politically hardened since the last game.
The reveal cycle for Metro 2039 has been steady across 2026. The official reveal trailer arrived on 27 April 2026, alongside a gameplay teaser and an Xbox First Look feature produced with publisher Deep Silver. A release window trailer followed on 26 June. The Gamescom appearances cap that run: the Opening Night Live trailer on 25 August, and hands-on playable demos for attendees at Gamescom in Cologne from 27 to 30 August (Deep Silver).
Gamescom, the annual games industry trade fair held in Cologne, Germany, has become one of the largest stages for publishers to show upcoming titles to both press and the public. Opening Night Live, the showcase that opens the event, is where 4A Games chose to place Metro 2039's latest footage — timed to air at 8PM CEST (7PM BST / 11AM PDT) on the show's opening night.
With a February 2027 release now roughly six months away, the trail of trailers is narrowing into a clear picture. A new protagonist, a familiar villain, a politically charged Moscow, and a studio whose own circumstances have shaped the story it is telling.
