Ubisoft is rebuilding Heroes of Might and Magic III — the turn-based strategy classic from 1999 — as a full 3D remake headed to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2027. Subtitled Return to Erathia, the project was announced during Gamescom Opening Night Live on 25 August 2026, according to Ubisoft's official newsroom.

The remake runs on Ubisoft's Snowdrop engine, the same technology behind the publisher's recent large-scale releases. The original game's flat 2D world is being replaced with a fully 3D environment featuring shifting seasons, weather effects, and all-new animations, as Eurogamer reported on 26 August 2026.

For anyone unfamiliar with the franchise, Heroes of Might and Magic III is a turn-based strategy game where players control heroes who explore a fantasy map, gather resources, build up towns, and lead armies into tactical combat on a grid. Released in 1999 by the now-defunct studio New World Computing, it became one of the most enduring titles in the PC strategy canon — a game with a community that never really moved on.

That loyalty is a big reason this remake exists. The original still has an active modding scene more than a quarter-century after release, and Ubisoft is leaning into that. The remake will ship with improved editor tools and a new in-game hub for user-generated content, the platform that lets players share custom maps and campaigns with each other. Existing player-created maps and campaigns from the original game will be compatible with the remake, meaning a vast library of community content carries over on day one.

The remake also includes both of the original game's expansions: Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death, which added new campaigns, units, and town types to the base game. That bundles the full Heroes III experience into a single package.

On PC, the game will be available through the Ubisoft Store, Ubisoft's own digital storefront, rather than launching day one on Steam or the Epic Games Store.

For fans of the original, the combination of bundled expansions and backward-compatible community maps is a signal that Ubisoft is treating this as more than a visual refresh. The 3D rebuild and the user-content tools suggest an effort to modernise the game's systems while preserving what the community built around it — not just what the original developers shipped.
